According to the American Kennel Club, or AKC, French Bulldogs were ranked the second most popular dog breed in the United States in 2021! The breed remains very popular, and as its popularity rises, it climbs the ranks to challenge the popularity of long-standing champions Labrador Retrievers.

History 

Originating in England, the French Bulldog was actually bred to be a miniature version of its cousin, the Bulldog. Over time, owners (particularly lacemakers) began taking their tiny bulldogs with them as they migrated to France, which is why these “miniature” bulldogs earned the title “French Bulldogs,” or for short, “Frenchies.” 

Characteristics 

A very popular breed amongst city dwellers, the French Bulldog is a cute, spritely, and companionable breed. Frenchies are very friendly with humans, and make human friends quickly and easily. 

The name “bulldog” often sounds intimidating to those who might not be acquainted with the breed, but in reality, French Bulldogs are some of the most loving and companionable pets. They’re loyal, sweet, and friendly, even to strangers — and tend to become quick friends with most new people they meet. They’re extremely loyal dogs, and aren’t just friendly with humans — they’re also very sociable with other animals! Heed caution, however, when your Frenchie is around other dogs and cats. Although they’re usually very friendly with other animals, Frenchies can sometimes become very territorial around other dogs or cats. 

Since Frenchies are so small, they’re very popular pet choices for big-city pet owners where space is limited and most living is quite compact. Overall, Frenchies are pretty adaptable, but are also known for their stubborn streak. 

Care and Wellness 

Frenchies don’t need a terribly large amount of exercise, but they still need enough to keep them healthy and in shape. Daily walks are important for maintaining wellness, but trips to the dog park or romps around the backyard are also great exercise activities. Frenchies are sweet, playful, and friendly, and although they don’t need as much exercise as other breeds, they still need lots of TLC. 

Since French bulldogs are known for their stubbornness, it’s something to be watchful of! Many experts advise that as a French bulldog owner, you should assert your dominance in the house as the “leader” so that your Frenchie will listen to you and see you as an authority figure. 

French bulldogs are a short-nosed or “brachycephalic” breed, putting them at higher risk for specific health concerns such as pinched nostrils of inefficient/shallow breathing. Not all French bulldogs are prone to these health concerns, but it’s important to keep a close eye on these conditions before they arise.

While cats aren’t always as adventurous as dogs, there’s still a reason for the coined term “curiosity killed the cat”! Cats aren’t generally ones to eat anything and everything, like dogs, but they still get into mischief– which is why it’s important to be aware of foods that are dangerous and toxic for not just dogs, but for cats as well. Here are 10 foods your cat should never eat: 

1. Raw meat 

Many cooked meats are fine to give your cats, depending on type and quantity, but raw meat is a no-go for our feline friends. Raw meat carries the high risk of food poisoning, dietary imbalance (nutrients), and consuming “foreign bodies” such as swallowing bones. Not only is consuming raw meat dangerous for cats, but it’s also dangerous for human cat owners — due to risk of infectious disease. 

2. Dairy products 

It’s a common misconception that dairy products are perfectly okay to feed cats — when in fact, dairy is actually quite dangerous. Many cats are actually lactose-intolerant, because as kittens, cats survive on their mother’s milk — not on dairy milk (coming from cows or goats). Dairy products upset cats’ digestive systems, making it an unpleasant and unideal food for them. 

3. Plant-based milks

Unlike humans, cats (lactose-intolerant) can’t substitute nut or oat milks for dairy. Many of the ingredients in plant milks (such as sugar, high fat content, oils, stabilizers, and preservatives) are dangerous for cats and can lead to many adverse side effects, such as weight gain, diabetes, and tooth decay. 

4. Grapes and raisins 

Just as for dogs, grapes and raisins cause liver failure in cats, due to an unknown toxic substance. The toxin in grapes and raisins poses an even greater threat than chocolate — so make sure your cat never gets ahold of these! Ingesting these foods can cause serious liver injury, and even liver failure. There’s no known amount of grapes/raisins that causes such damage, so it’s best to avoid them altogether. Scientists don’t know yet why these foods cause liver damage — they only know that it does. 

5. Chocolate 

Chocolate contains three ingredients which are toxic to cats: caffeine, xylitol and theobromine. Caffeine, as you’ll find below, causes similar side effects to the effects that humans experience after having it. Theobromine is a toxic substance naturally existing in cacao. Caffeine and theobromine are both stimulants which increase blood pressure, heart rate, and induce vomiting. Some chocolates may even contain xylitol, which is HIGHLY toxic to both cats and dogs. Under no circumstances should your pet ever consume xylitol. In addition to these toxic substances, chocolate can contain ingredients such as natural sugar and fat, which aren’t toxic, but are dangerous and cause discomfort. 

6. Nuts 

The primary danger nuts pose is choking — which puts cats more at risk than dogs, considering their smaller biological systems. Nuts also have a high-fat concentration, causing weight gain and risk of pancreatitis and diabetes. Among the most dangerous are macadamia and walnuts. 

7. Onions and garlic 

Onion and garlic are included in the allium group, a plant family containing Allium– which is highly toxic and dangerous for both dogs and cats. Symptoms might not show for 2-4 after consumption, but some symptoms include: oral irritation, elevated heart and respiratory rate, lethargy, weakness, and potentially coma. 

8. Dog food 

Very small quantities of dog food aren’t harmful to cats, but if it’s consumed in large quantities or eaten frequently, it can be quite damaging for cats. Dog food is lacking in certain nutrients that cats need to survive, such as Vitamin A and taurine. Cats, being stricter carnivores than dogs, need more protein — and if they’re consistently eating dog food, they aren’t getting the quantities of protein that they need to stay healthy.  

9. Coconut

Again, in very small quantities, it’s actually okay to feed your cat coconut (in its most raw, natural form), as long as they don’t have adverse reactions. However, consistently feeding your cat coconut, or feeding in large quantities, can be dangerous, and even fatal. Because of the high fat concentration, coconut puts cats at risk for hyperlipidemia and pancreatitis. 

10. Coffee 

Caffeine in any form is dangerous for cats, and this includes your morning cup of coffee. You should be especially cognizant of this if you love to add milk and creamer to your coffee, or if you have an especially curious kitten. Caffeine raises blood pressure and heart rate in cats, causing their nervous system to go haywire and leaves them in unrest. At the extreme, cats could lose control of their muscular system, and even risk muscle spasms or seizures. 

What to do if your cat eats something toxic 

• Call ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center 
• Call your local vet 
• Cats aren’t as prone to being as adventurous with their food as dogs, and the Animal Poison Control Center and ASPCA don’t see nearly as many cats having eaten something poisonous as dogs — but to be on the safe side, keep these dangerous foods away from pets, and call for help as soon as you find out your pet has eaten something toxic

When your dog is giving you sad puppy eyes from beneath the table at dinnertime, we know firsthand how hard it is to not spoon them everything on your plate (especially when what’s on your plate is not something you’re particularly fond of)! There are quite a few human foods that are considered dangerous and highly toxic to dogs– and if you’ve got a friendly pooch perched at the end of your dinner table every night, it’s important to know which foods are toxic, and which are safe. Here are 10 human foods your dog should never eat: 

1. Xylitol 

A common ingredient in sugar-free gum, Xylitol can be fatal and has almost immediate effects on dogs if consumed. Xylitol is extremely toxic, so make sure to check packaging on anything labeled “sugar-free” before feeding it to your dog. In fact, it might be better to completely avoid feeding your dog anything with the “sugar-free” label altogether. 

2. Chocolate 

You should never, under any circumstance, feed your dog chocolate. For dogs, and many other animals, it’s a highly toxic substance that has fatal potential. If you keep chocolate around the house, store it in a highly inaccessible place that your dog won’t be able to reach– preferably high off the ground and stored away in a safe space. If your dog eats even just a small amount, take them to the vet right away. 

3. Onion and Garlic

Onion and garlic are included in the allium group, a plant family containing Allium– which is highly toxic and dangerous for both dogs and cats. Allium damages red blood cells, which reduces oxygen flow, and results in anemia, organ failure, or fatal consequences.

4. Cinnamon 

While cinnamon is not the most toxic or dangerous spice, it’s best to avoid giving it to your dog. It’s an irritant which, in large quantities, can lower your dog’s blood sugar– but won’t cause any serious long-term damage if taken in extremely small amounts. Overall, to be on the safe side, it’s best to avoid altogether if you’re unsure about what’s considered a safe amount. 

5. Almonds

Almonds are dangerous for the esophagus, causing scraping, tearing or irritation. They also increase risk of developing pancreatitis due to high fat content, while simultaneously, high salt concentration can lead to “water retention and salt toxicity” if consumed in large quantities. 

6. Milk and Dairy Products 

Milk is another food that, if consumed in large quantities, can lead to pancreatitis because of its high fat concentration and natural sugars. Other dairy products run the same risks, although not as much as milk. For example, cheese is much safer to feed your dog than milk, and is often used to disguise pills when trying to feed them to your dog. Alternative milks should also be avoided, especially almond, cashew, and oat milks. Coconut milk is fine to give to your dog, since it’s a naturally occurring product, and isn’t classified as a milk or nut (like cow milk or nuts such as almonds and cashews). 

7. Grapes and Raisins 

Since they contain an unknown substance that’s highly toxic to dogs– potentially causing liver failure– grapes and raisins are an off-limits food for dogs. According to ASPCA, the mysterious toxicity of these foods has been continuing for 20 years– and there’s still no concrete understanding as to why grapes and raisins are so toxic to dogs and their livers. A going theory recently stated that the culprit is a toxic substance known as “tartaric acid.” There’s also a possibility that this tartaric acid causes kidney failure as well as liver failure, just one more reason to avoid grapes and raisins at all costs. 

8. Avocado 

A fungicidal toxin known as persin is the cause of this well-loved food’s toxicity, causing dangerous side effects for dogs. When scouring the internet, you’re sure to find many sources and pet blogs telling you that avocado isn’t AS toxic for dogs as it is for other animals, therefore meaning that it’s fine to feed avocado to your dog. This is not the case. Although avocados may be LESS toxic for dogs than for other animals, it doesn’t mean the food is 100% safe for your pup to eat. Avocados contain persin in various quantities depending on the part of the fruit, which is dangerous, but at the same time, avocados are also high in fat– which is a danger for developing pancreatitis. 

9. Caffeine 

For dogs, caffeine is considered a toxic substance due to the side effects it causes. These can include: increase in blood pressure (causing cardiac arrhythmias), loss of muscle control, seizures, or vomiting and diarrhea.  

10. Raw Eggs 

While eggs contain high amounts of protein, raw eggs are completely toxic to dogs, and should be avoided at all costs! Cooked eggs are fine to feed to your dog, and as we mentioned, are a great source of protein. But when eggs are ingested raw, they contain an enzyme called “avidin” which restricts the absorption of a B Vitamin called biotin. This leads to a biotin deficiency, which puts dogs at risk of developing an unhealthy coat, skin problems, and even the possibility of salmonella poisoning.

1. Watch the cat to sense its feelings 

The first step to befriending a stray cat is to empathize and observe: is it skittish? Shy? Friendly? Aggressive? If the cat hisses and backs away when you begin to approach it, it’s not in a place to make a new friend– and it’s better for both of you if you keep your distance. If this happens, and the cat continues to come back, you can move step by step down this list to establish trust. If the cat is friendly upon first approach, however, befriending the cat will be much easier! 

If the cat is friendly, you can approach cautiously. If you feel it’s safe to do so, you might slowly, gently reach out your hand to see if the cat then approaches you. You want the cat to meet you halfway– if you’re the one doing all of the approaching, the cat might feel threatened. Give it a chance to approach you after you’ve made the first move. 

2. Offer cat-safe food 

One of the first things you can do, regardless of whether or not you and the cat have established a friendship, is supply a basic necessity. Cats warm up quicker to people who offer them sustenance– food or water. Beyond establishing trust, giving the cat food or water is taking care of it. This ensures that the cat is well-fed and has its basic needs met. Many strays can manage on their own, but there are also a few domesticated cats that aren’t used to the harsh life of a stray, and need a little extra help. Safe food options to provide include: cat treats, dry cat food, canned cat food (taken out of the can so there are no sharp can edges), and water. Don’t leave food out overnight, however, as it will attract unwanted critters instead of keeping the cat fed. 

3. Establish trust 

Establishing trust can come in many ways. In your initial interactions with the stray cat, start small: crouch down so that you’re on the cat’s level. It’s also recommended that you don’t stare, because staring will make the cat uncomfortable or tense. Approach slowly and gently, and based on when you sensed the cat’s feelings (Step 1), and if the cat seemed friendly and non-threatened, then you can slowly extend your hand to see if the cat approaches you. If the cat is interested, it will sniff your hand or fingers before bowing its head to allow you to pet it. If the cat trusts you enough to let you pet it, start gently and carefully, as to not scare the cat. If you bring out food and water to the cat so that it sees you bringing it sustenance, your actions will continue to establish trust since you’re caring for the cat’s basic needs. 

4. Bonus step: Take the cat to the vet 

This step is for those who have developed a friendship with a stray cat. ONLY attempt this IF you have established solid trust with the cat, and you’re able to coax it into a safe cat carrier to get to the vet. There are a few reasons you might want to take the cat to the vet: to check for a microchip (in case the cat belongs to someone and has gotten lost), for a check-up to make sure it’s healthy and well, or to get it spayed/neutered. If you’re unsure if this is the right thing for you to do, or if you’re unsure how to do it safely, talk to your vet before making any decisions.

1. Make or Buy Their Favorite Treats

What is Valentine’s Day without something sweet? Treat your pet to a snack you know they’ll love. You can buy their favorite treat, or even make your own! There are plenty of pet-safe treat recipes out there, for both cats and dogs, and you can customize them to your pet’s liking. 

2. Reserve a Day at Doggie Daycare 

I don’t know about you, but my family’s dog LOVES doggie daycare– besides home, and the dog park, it’s his favorite place on earth. He gets to see all his pals, run around like a madman, and get all of his crazy energy out! If this is your dog too, a reservation at doggie daycare might be just the treat for a special Valentine’s Day. But when your pup gets home, make sure to spoil him/her with lots of love and cuddles. 

3. Plan an Outdoor Excursion 

What better way to spend quality time with your dog (or adventure cat) than spending it outdoors? Get outside; go for a long walk on their favorite route, take a fun hike, or visit the dog park (or their favorite park, if you’ve got an adventure cat with you). 

4. Arrange a Playdate with their Best Bud 

What better way to celebrate than to hang out with treasured friends? You can hang out with your pals while your pet hangs out with theirs! 

5. Get them Groomed (or do it yourself) 

If your pet wants to be feline fine this Valentine’s Day, treat them with a trip to the groomer (or not, if that’s not their cup of tea). If you don’t feel like taking them to the groomer, or if the groomer is their least favorite place to go, you can just as easily treat them to a grooming at home.

Starring Channing Tatum as Briggs, Dog is an epic adventure of former Army Ranger and his dog Lulu as they race down the coast to make it to their old friend’s funeral in time. Turning Red (March 11, 2022)

Whenever 13-year-old Mei gets too excited, she turns into a giant red panda– a seemingly strange phenomenon, until Mei’s parents explain their ancestral connection to red pandas. Navigating middle school was already difficult enough without being part red panda, but thankfully, Mei’s friends are incredibly supportive of her strange secret. Full of laughs, stylized Pixar animation, and empowering female friendship, Turning Red will be Disney’s third straight-to-streaming release, made “free” to Disney+ members beginning March 11.

DC League of Super Pets (May 20, 2022)

While super-dog Krypto is not the most socially adept around other animals, he finds his best friend in Superman as they fight alongside with their similar superpowers to protect the city of Metropolis. When Superman is captured, it’s up to Krypto and his rugged pack of super animals to save the day. 

Jurassic World: Dominion (June 10, 2022)

Jurassic World: Dominion is the third in the Jurassic World sequence, following Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Set four years after the last film, Dominion follows the consequences of letting loose dinosaurs across the globe, and the team trying to prevent such disastrous events. 

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (September 16, 2022)

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (November 18, 2022)

Based on a children’s book about a crocodile living in New York City, Lyle the crocodile must prove himself worthy of staying outside of the zoo in this live-action adaptation. 

Strange World (November 23, 2022) 

Not much is known yet about this fascinating fantasy film by Disney, other than, according to IMDB: “The legendary Clades are a family of explorers whose differences threatened to topple their latest and most crucial mission” (IMDB)– and this strange world they reside in is filled with fantastical creatures of all kinds.

1. Never shave your dog or cat’s fur

During the frigid winter months, your dog or cat needs that extra fluff on their little bodies– it keeps them extra warm and protected from the harsh winter weather. It is wise, however, to trim the ends of their fur (without giving them a full haircut!) to help prevent snow or ice balls from gathering.

2. Wipe off snowy paws!

Even though trimming fur can help to prevent snow or ice balls clinging to your pet’s fur, it’s not a completely preventative tactic. Clumps of snow and ice can still get stuck to your pet’s fur, especially on or near their paws, which can be uncomfortable or dangerous if left untreated. 3. More food, more fluff

It’s generally okay to feed your pet more during the winter months, since this provides more calories that their bodies may need to keep warm (especially if it’s a smaller pet). The few extra calories serves as insulation for your pet and traps in a little extra body heat. Be careful not to overdo it, of course– you never want to overfeed your pet or cause a significant amount of weight gain, so speak with your vet before changing your pet’s diet.

4. Invest in cozy bedding

Make sure your pet has a warm and cozy place to sleep that will keep them insulated and warm all night! No matter where your pet sleeps at night, it’s important to make sure that they’re well taken care of all night long. Also, never leave your pet outside overnight. The frigid temperatures are too cold for your pets at night, and their health will suffer significantly if you don’t bring them indoors. 5. Keep a close eye on your pet’s health

#2: Get outdoors! 

A great and easy way to make sure you’re getting outdoors more is to schedule daily walks or hikes. Beginning with one walk a day with your dog (or adventure cat) is the perfect way to schedule in a new routine. Walks have many health benefits for you and your pet, especially if you work from home and don’t get out enough. If you have time or build up to it, taking one walk in the morning and one walk in the evening is extra beneficial. And– if you haven’t gotten around to hiking yet– hikes are the perfect way to switch things up, and try something new! #3: Schedule an appointment with your vet

Our pets don’t always communicate with us in ways we understand. Because of this, sometimes we need the help of a medical professional to make sure our loveable fur friends are in their best health. Pet health professionals recommend that you schedule a check-in with your vet at least once per year. Ask your local vet for their recommendations, and in the meantime, check out our blog post Why Regular Vet Appointments are Important for Pet Health! 

#4: Try a new activity together 

It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks! It’s also never too late to teach young dogs (or yourself!) a new trick. A great way to bond with your pet, while also getting out of your comfort zone and pushing yourself, is to try a new activity together. Whether it’s frisbee at the park, hiking, visiting a dog park, or becoming an adventure cat family, new experiences are so fun and are great for bonding you and your pet. 

#5: Brush your pet’s teeth 

Dental disease affects almost 85% of pets! Brushing is recommended once a day, but if that’s not an easy goal, start with once every other day. Dogs and cats both benefit from a daily teeth brush– and so do you, since your pet’s breath will no longer be smelly! 

#6: Adopt a shelter animal, if you can 

We know that not everyone is in the position to adopt a new pet– but if you are, adopting from a shelter is the best way you can adopt. #7: Shop cruelty-free products

Are German Shepherds well-behaved, or mischievous? 

cliff_thebigbrowndog: I believe any animal can be very well behaved, as long as you put the time into training them!  I’ve personally only had a really good association with very well behaved German Shepherds.

kaida.thegsd: In my experience German Shepherds are very well behaved! I know many are different but I’ve owned a few breeds and German Shepherds have amazing temperament but they definitely aren’t for everyone.

bestboybenson: German Shepherds can be well-behaved and mischievous! Many German Shepherds are very well-behaved and almost all of them have some sort of mischievous side too, whether that is begging for food at the dinner table, refusing to take a bath, or stealing your socks.

What should someone know before adopting a German Shepherd?

cliff_thebigbrowndog: Just be prepared for a lot of work. They definitely aren’t the easiest dogs and they have a lot of energy. They need to be taken out and have a job or they can get into things ???? 

kaida.thegsd: German Shepherds are very smart so I do recommend researching the breed and making sure they’re suitable for you ! They’re very high energy dogs .

bestboybenson: Training is so important! It is especially important to socialize your German Shepherd from a young age to avoid any behavioral type problems. German Shepherds also shed a ton, so be prepared for that. They are worth every penny though!

What can German Shepherd owners do to be the best dog parent possible? 

cliff_thebigbrowndog: TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN. Continuously working on training no matter how old they are. And setting boundaries. 

kaida.thegsd: Future German shepherd owners , Training is an absolute must for these dogs ! I highly recommend training right when you get you’re new gsd puppy . 

bestboybenson: Be patient with your German Shepherd. They are extremely smart dogs and will find ways to test your patience at times. Provide them with love and care and you will develop a bond that can never be broken.

What makes German Shepherds unique from other dogs? 

cliff_thebigbrowndog: German shepherds are very loyal dogs and always want to work for you. They’re always trying to find a way to provide and be the best they can for you. And I think it’s just something really unique about them. 

kaida.thegsd: I believe all dogs are unique in their own way but German Shepherds are amazing , they catch on extremely quick and would do anything for their owner(s) ! ❤️

bestboybenson: Their personality! German Shepherds are known for being goofy, energetic, loyal, and intelligent. You’ll never find another breed like a German Shepherd and that is why they are the third-most registered breed by the American Kennel Club in 2020.

Is there anything else you think people should know about German Shepherds?

cliff_thebigbrowndog: The only thing I would say is don’t listen to stereotypes. A lot of negative things TECO around about German shepherds and most/not all German Shepherd‘s are bad. They not easy dogs and not for everyone. But they’re so worth it!

kaida.thegsd: German Shepherds are amazing and truly a beautiful breed , once you own one of these amazing dogs you won’t regret it ! I advise anyone who wants one to please do research before getting one as they aren’t for everyone.

bestboybenson: I think people need to know that most German Shepherds are not aggressive and scary. There are so many sweet German Shepherds out there in the world who love all dogs and people more than anything.

The fall and winter months are perfect for cozying up in your favorite sweater, but when taking it out of storage, it might be a bit musty or dusty! To freshen it up and prepare it for the season, follow these steps below to achieve ultimate sweater satisfaction. 

Step 1: Give your sweaters a good wash 

After coming out of storage, your sweaters might have picked up some dust or gotten a bit crumpled. The first thing you can do to freshen your garment up is to give it a good wash! When washing sweaters, you should always wash on the “delicates” setting, or at least make sure that the temperature is set on a “cold” wash. 

Step 2: Don’t forget the air drying 

Since sweaters are delicate, machine drying is dangerous for the longevity of the material. Sweaters should be air dried if at all possible, to preserve the quality of the fibers. Machine drying also runs the risk of shrinking your sweater, whereas air drying doesn’t present the same issue. Air drying, instead, allows your sweater’s material to breathe, and not shrink.

1. Keep your pets in a safe space 

With all the chaotic bustle of Halloween– the loud noises, the new people, the crazy costumes– your pet is sure to get overwhelmed by the stimuli! The best place to keep your pet Halloween night is a quiet, secluded space, where all the noise won’t stress them out. There’s a lot of stress for pets on Halloween night from the excess noise and strange visuals, so care for your pet by keeping them in a safe space. 

2. Stay away from candy 

Candy is not safe for your pet to eat! It’s a great treat for you, but not your pet. Keep your candy (or your kid’s candy) in a high, hard-to-reach space where your pet can’t get to it. If you need to keep your pet occupied, give them a pet-exclusive treat or toy to hold their attention. 

3. Choose safe Halloween costumes 

If you’re planning on dressing up your pet for the holiday, be sure their costume is safe, comfortable, and non-threatening. Be wary of garments that are too tight or constricting to movement or breathing. Also be on the lookout for any attachments that could be choking hazards– or more likely, dangerous snacks. 

4. Get IDs up to date BEFORE the holiday 

Just in case something happens, even if you’ve taken all necessary safety precautions, it’s best to have your pet fully ID-ed so that it’s easy to find them if they bolt out the door or go missing. 

5. Keep decorations out of reach 

Halloween decorations can be loads of fun, but they can also be dangerous or toxic to pets! Make sure most of your decorations are in places that your pets can’t reach. Decorations to consider are jack-o-lanterns, cobwebs, smoke machines, and anything over-stimulating or visually confusing.

3. Their sense of smell is 100,000 times stronger than a human’s 

Dogs can also smell your feelings! They can also use those powerful noses for things like sniffing out diseases, or even fear (when someone is scared, their perspiration changes, and dogs can sense that change!). 

4. They’re jealous of your affections 

Dogs get jealous when they see you displaying affection to other dogs or animals… but on the flip side, they don’t feel guilt! So when they’re giving you puppy eyes after doing something naughty… they don’t actually feel guilty at all; they’re just responding to you. 

5. Petting a dog is beneficial for your mental health

6. There’s a town mayor who’s a dog

All About Bernese

Bernese Mountain Dogs are well-known as the gentle giants of dog breeds. Many owners claim them to be sweet, low-energy, and big-hearted. While they are a sensitive breed, they’re still strong and loyal. 

The Bernese Mountain Dog was one of four breeds originating from the mountains of Switzerland. Bernese came from nearby the canton (county) of Bern, and helped farmers of this agricultural region by herding cattle, guarding farmland, and being man’s best friend. 

In the late 1800s, the Bernese population was rapidly declining, but thankfully, Swiss fanciers fought to reverse the decline. Bernese Mountain Dogs were brought back strong, and made their way to the U.S. in 1926, beginning their American journey as farm dogs. 

A Q&A with the Lilly Brush Community

Are Bernese Mountain Dogs well-behaved, or mischievous? 

swisskissberner: Bernese, for the most part, are well behaved. It really depends on their owners and how they train them! If you put time, love and energy into them they will be good!

bigmacbernie: Both. At times you get the mischievous side, like when Bernie will just sit down on a walk because he wants to go another way. 

mousse.tracks: Both! Berners are very smart and easy to train but they’re also very stubborn and mischievous when they want to be!

bert_and_bernie_the_berners: With proper and consistent training, a Berner will be well-behaved, but they definitely have a naughty streak, especially as puppies! It all depends on the individual dog, but Berners are known to be sock eaters. Luckily Bert has never chewed up anything he wasn’t supposed to have, but Ernie destroyed a pair of sunglasses and a few pairs of slippers when he was a puppy. He still likes to shred paper sometimes! We’re just fortunate that he doesn’t swallow the things he chews that he isn’t supposed to! 

What should someone know before adopting a Bernese Mountain Dog?

swisskissberner: People should know that these dogs have the biggest hearts in the world and that they are a very sensitive breed. Some people think they are just like tri-colored Golden Retrievers and that simply isn’t true! Also know, that they shed A LOT, they are puppies for two years and they are a dog you need health insurance for.

bigmacbernie: can you live life with endless amounts of hair? It never stops. You find it everywhere, and I mean EVERWHERE!!

mousse.tracks: They are very attached and love to be where you are all the time. You have to be ok with no personal space if you want a Berner!

bert_and_bernie_the_berners: Berners are funny, silly, goofy dogs! I wasn’t prepared for them to be such comedians, but they definitely have a sense of humor that none of the other dogs I’ve owned have had. Berners are also cuddly, loving, and eager to please. Oh, and there’s lots of fur 🙂 

What can Bernie owners do to be the best dog parent possible? 

swisskissberner: I believe every single Bernese owner should take their puppy to puppy obedience classes before the age of 4 months, then do another round of classes when their puppy is over six months old. This helps give them a good foundation because Bernese are BIG dogs, that need big training ????

And know that a lot of money and time will go into their health, they have sensitive digestive systems and sometimes a lot of time goes into figuring out what the best diet is for them. 

mousse.tracks: Give them lots of love, attention and be sure to exercise them regularly! Berners are very large dogs and can become overweight, which can be hard on their joints. Helping them maintain a balanced diet and exercising them regularly keeps them happy and healthy, and hopefully help them live forever. ????

bert_and_bernie_the_berners: Early socialization and exposure to lots of different types of people, dogs, and environments will set your dog up for success. I try to bring the dogs along whenever I can to give them a chance to see new things and experience new situations. Establishing a strong relationship with a vet you trust is key too.

What makes Bernies unique from other dogs? 

swisskissberner: Bernese are unique because of their sensitivity. They seem to be able to read your emotions unlike any other breed. If you’re sad they will try to cheer you up. If you’re happy they will celebrate with you! They are amazing. Also they are incredible with kids.

bigmacbernie: They have the ability to be majestic and the goofiest dogs! They seriously are the most gorgeous dogs and also will make you laugh every single day. 

mousse.tracks: They’re the gentlest giants and the biggest lap dogs! They are unaware of their massive size and love to sit on you!

bert_and_bernie_the_berners: Berners are versatile dogs that are eager to please, and there are so many different sports and activities they can participate in. The breed originated in Switzerland and is a working group breed – they were bred to pull carts of cheese and milk up and down the Swiss Alps! Draft is a unique dog sport that Berners often participate in, and they can learn to pull a cart and maneuver it safely. The sad part about having a Berner is that they often don’t live as long as other breeds. There is an old Swiss saying about this: “Three years a young dog, three years a good dog, three years an old dog, and the rest is a gift.” We are so fortunate to have a non-profit organization called Berner-Garde established as a free online health-records sharing group to advance the longevity and health of the breed. The Berner-Garde Foundation has been supporting scientific research to benefit Bernese Mountain Dogs for more than 25 years!

bigmacbernie: Be prepared to be stopped constantly during your outing. They are like celebrities. Everyone loves them!

mousse.tracks: Berners tend to have shorter life expectancies (avg 6-8 yrs though we’ve seen some live to be 10-12). Males tend to be larger than females. They also have very sensitive stomachs! Despite their health issues, life with a Berner is well worth it – they are the sweetest, gentlest, silliest and most affectionate pups and bring so much joy to the entire family. Once you have a Berner, you won’t want to live without one!

bert_and_bernie_the_berners: These big goofballs are often portrayed as calm, gentle giants, but they have rowdy and energetic periods just like other breeds do!

Cats are mysterious creatures by nature– so it’s only natural that there are things about them that most of us don’t know! To unveil the mystery, here are 8 things you didn’t know about cats:

1. They mark you as their territory 

When your cat rubs their head against you, it’s not only a sign of affection, but also a way of marking their territory (that’s you!). They have scent glands around their face, their paws, and the base of their tails which lend to them “marking their territory.” 

2. Cats are more popular than dogs 

Contrary to popular belief, cats are actually more popular than dogs in the U.S.! Although dogs may be more “socially” popular, the truth lies in the numbers. There are 88.3 million pet cats in America, versus 74.8 million dogs. 

3. Meowing mimics human voices 

Cats don’t meow to communicate with each other– instead, it’s their way of mimicking human voices! Anytime you catch your cat meowing like crazy, it’s to get your attention, rather than the attention of other cats. Cats can also recognize your voice– so if you think they’re ignoring you when you call for them, they are! They’re able to distinguish between human voices, even though their own human-mimicking meows all sound the same. 

4. Purring is a form of self-healing 

Studies show that purring isn’t just a sign of happiness. While it can be an indicator of a cat’s contentedness, it’s also something cats might do when they’re stressed. Purring has recently been hypothesized to be a self-healing tactic. Cats purr at a frequency of 25 to 150 Hertz, which is the frequency range in which muscles and bones self-repair. 

5. They don’t think you’re able to take care of yourself 

This is why they might occasionally bring you a dead bird or mouse– no, they aren’t bringing it to you endearingly, but instead because they think you’re completely incapable of doing your own hunting. You’re welcome. 

6. Cats spend ⅔ of their lives sleeping and cleaning themselves 

One-third of a cat’s life is spent sleeping, while another third is spent cleaning themselves! The last third of their lives is probably spent chasing lasers and begging for dinner. 

7. They have a dominant paw 

… meaning they can be right or left-pawed! Research from 2009 shows that cats’ left or right “paw-dness” is divided between genders. Male cats are typically left-pawed, while female cats are right-pawed. 

8. Nose prints for cats are the equivalent to fingerprints for humans 

A cat’s nose print is just as unique as any human’s fingerprint! Their noses are quite incredible; a cat’s sense of smell is also 14 times more sensitive than ours.

Why do dogs roll in smelly things? No one knows the answer for sure! There are many theories, however, as to why it happens. We’ll start off with a few of the least plausible theories, and move towards the most plausible. But as of now, no one has nailed down the secret of this phenomenon! 

1. Collecting and Sending Information 

One theory states that the odors that dogs accumulate from rolling in gross things is that it sends a message to their pack– a theory derived from observing wolves (Pat Goodman, researcher at Wolf Park, Indiana). The theory suggests that wolves roll in smelly things in order to “gather information” to take back to their pack. This way, the pack collects information without having to go to the source themselves. This would make it easier for wolves to collect information about their environment, or to track down dinner. 

The problem with this theory is that if it were plausible, the wolves would immediately move to the site of the information to investigate. This has not been observed, deeming the theory not likely. 

2. Depositing Scent 

Another theory suggests that dogs try to cover the scent of things with their own scent, rather than picking up the scent. This is similar to how dogs will “mark their territory” on something like a tree, or like how dogs deposit their scent on humans by rubbing up against them. 

3. Disguising One’s Own Odor 

The most plausible theory is that rolling in smelly things is a means to disguise the dog’s own scent. This would cover the dog’s natural odor and keep them safe from dangerous predators, OR to disguise them while hunting prey. The dog’s prey would be frightened by the scent of the dog, but if disguised by a different smell, they would never suspect the predatorial dog sneaking up behind them. It’s easy to forget that dogs are natural predators, but their modern evolution lends them to not needing all of the ancestral traits that they carry. 

4. Sensory Stimulation 

There is one last theory, and it is the simplest: as vision is humanity’s primary sense, scent is dog’s. Just like people, dogs enjoy sensory stimulation, sometimes to an excessive amount. The need to seek out opportunities for rolling in smelly things is a need to satisfy some need for excessive stimulation. 

This theory is wittily developed by Stanley Coren, writer for Psychology Today. This theory is his own, although he claims it has “no scientific merit whatsoever.” The conclusion to his theory, in his own words, is this: “I believe that the real reason that canines roll in obnoxious smelling organic manner is simply an expression of the same misbegotten sense of aesthetics that causes human beings to wear overly loud and colorful Hawaiian shirts.”

Meet the winner of July’s Most Satisfying Video Contest!

Javier Aranda, the winner of July 2021’s Most Satisfying Video contest, is the owner and operator of “A Buff and Beyond Detailing” out of Dallas, Texas. Lilly Brush Co. was able to snag an interview with the ambitious auto detailer, and share his story and some of his insights into the world of detailing!

Beginning his career in office jobs, Javier worked for 6 years before starting his own detailing business. He began detailing as a weekend gig, working with his brother-in-law and building up clientele. In his own words: “The rest is history. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” 

Javier and his team care deeply for their customers, which is why they provide the highest quality service. As a special treat for the customers, the team leaves behind a card after every service. This card shows their package, the included services, and a “courtesy box.” The courtesy box indicates any “courtesy cleans” the company has done on the vehicle– which could include anything from “car seat being cleaned” to “rearview camera being cleaned” to “buffing some scratches.” 

Auto detailing is no easy job– and as any sophisticated handiwork, it comes with its challenges. For Javier, it’s “dealing with the heat!” After working 6 years of office jobs, detailing was a drastic change in work climate. He and his team now spend their time outside in the hot Texas sun while detailing vehicles. Javier notes there’s a huge difference between “sitting in an office with a sweater on while it’s 100 degrees outside” and “actually being outside in that 100 degrees!” Javier and his team stick to wearing dry fit clothing to keep the heat at bay. 

When asked about the funniest thing he’s ever found in a car, Javier chuckles. He tells the story of how there was one car that came in where the customer said there was a strong odor, but it wasn’t until after the full interior deep clean that the team found a dead rat in the car! 

Javier’s advice to any detailer starting out is to “be consistent.” He adds: “There’s no limit to what you can do if you put your mind to it.” He remembers his time at a desk job, and the risk he took in quitting his stable job to go full-time detailing. “I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world,” he concludes.

What is it?

National Black Cat Appreciation Day (August 17) is a holiday designed to celebrate the underappreciated black cat population in the U.S. The holiday was started by Wayne Morris in honor of his sister June and her black cat Sinbad. 

Historically, black cats have carried many negative connotations due to myths and legends originating in the Middle Ages. Since the beginning of the holiday, people have sought to redeem the image associated with black cats, and appreciate them for the splendid and magnificent creatures they are. Don’t confuse this holiday with National Black Cat Day in October! 

Why celebrate? 

Black cats are one of the most overlooked animals in shelters, and one of the least adopted pet breeds– statistics that Black Cat Appreciation Day seeks to change. The holiday spreads awareness and encourages people to look beyond the stereotypes and instead accept black cats for the beautiful creatures they are. 

Why Black Cats Are Overlooked

There are many reasons black cats are overlooked, beginning with their history rooted in myths and legends, and spanning to today’s modern world of social media and photography. 

Black cats are more difficult to photograph, making them an unpopular choice for influencers and Instagrammers. This shouldn’t stop you from getting a black cat, though– because they’re a challenge to photograph, the reward is even greater. Additionally, once a photographer figures out how to photograph black cats well, the results are simply stunning. 

History of Black Cats

As aforementioned, negative connotations about black cats began with the superstitions of the Middle Ages. People during this time– primarily the Catholic Church– believed “witches” to possess the ability to shapeshift into black cats. Since then, the connotation has stuck, especially during the Halloween-centered month of October, hence why October is the official Black Cat Awareness Month. 

Before the rise of Christianity, cats in general carried the association of the moon, along with many goddesses. Goddesses such as Ceridwen (Celtic) and Freya (Norse) were attended to by white cats. Then, with Christianity’s increasing popularity, white cat imagery converted to black as a symbol of the sinful pagan ideas of gods and goddesses. Quite unfortunately, this shift in imagery drove extremist religious heads to drastic measures. “Witches” were not the only ones persecuted– cats, primarily black, were also treated cruelly and unjustly. Unspeakable horrors came to these poor creatures. 

In many other cultures, however, black cats are celebrated and seen as a symbol of luck or prosperity. Moving forward, we should look to these cultures and the ways in which they celebrate black cats as a model for how we should reshape culture to appreciate them.

What can you do?

If you have a black cat, the easiest and most obvious thing to do to celebrate is to spoil your cat! Show them extra love and affection; perhaps even buy them a new toy or treat. If you don’t have a black cat, you could adopt one! However, if you’re not in a place to adopt, the best thing you can do is spread awareness about the holiday via social media. You can even share this blog post to your friends and followers!

Why should you groom your pet?

Grooming is an important part of pet health and hygiene! How often you take your pet to the groomer is dependent on a few different factors, including your pet’s species, breed, size, and type of fur. Grooming has many health benefits for your pet, which vary between animals and breeds.

Some grooming rituals you can do at home, while others need professional treatment. The most common advice is that if you aren’t sure what you’re doing, take your pet to the pros! If you have years of experience, however, there are grooming treatments for your pets that you can tackle in the comfort of your own home. 

Cats 

While cats are self-grooming animals, they still need a little extra TLC. Luckily, grooming your cat can be done at home! If you decide to groom your cat on your own, however, make sure you’re extremely careful and do your research beforehand to ensure your cat’s safety. 

It’s recommended that long-haired cats are groomed once every day, while short-haired cats are groomed once every 2-3 days. 

Brushing your cat comes with many health benefits, including: detangling, keeping away mats, and promoting a healthier coat. 

Dogs 

Dogs, unlike cats, are not quite as self-sufficient in the area of self-grooming. They do, to an extent, clean themselves, but many dogs (especially with undercoats) need a little more attention when it comes to grooming. 

Short-Haired Dogs

Short-haired dogs need less frequent bathing, and generally only need the occasional bath. For short-haired dogs that shed a lot, once a month is a great place to start. 

If you have a short-haired dog that sheds a lot, you can take them to the groomer to get a brushing treatment. This involves a “low-shed” service, meaning the groomer will give your dog a basic deshedding brush treatment. Fortunately, this is easy to do at home: all you need is a great deshedding brush or tool. Regularly brushing your dog is very healthy, as it stimulates growth in the hair follicles and reduces dry skin.

Be very careful not to bathe your dog too frequently; too much bath time will dry out your pup’s skin and leave them itching and shedding. A good set schedule for bathing is once a month, or whenever they start to stink! 

Dogs with Undercoats 

Undercoats are a protective measure your dog’s fur takes against its environment. Their long overcoat protects them from sun, parasites, dirt, and moisture, while the undercoat keeps them warm during the winter. During the hot summer months, the undercoat sheds because it isn’t necessary for their protection at that time of year. 

Be cautious while grooming dogs with undercoats! It’s tempting to shave or de-shed their undercoat yourself, but dogs need to undergo the natural process on their own– otherwise, you’re putting your dog at risk for developing heatstroke and sunburn. 

Dogs with undercoats need to be groomed about four times a year. For this, you can either take them to a professional who will know the limits of shedding undercoats, or you can carefully groom away the dead layers of fur with a brush like the FURminator. 

Long-Haired Dogs

Long-haired dogs are the most prone to developing mats. While you may have the urge to cut them out yourself, you should take your dog to a professional to do so. Mats lie dangerously close to the skin, and if you’re not careful, you could end up hurting your dog. For dealing with mats, professionals are the best way to go. 

The tufts of fur sticking out in various places do require frequent trimming, but that aside, long-haired dogs generally need the same general grooming as the dog types listed above: monthly bathing, occasional grooming, and careful attention.

Simple Beginnings

Deep in the Canadian Rockies, a fluffy Maine Coon named Bodhi (bodhi_theadventurecat) proudly sits at the front of a cayenne-red kayak, perusing the waters. Somewhere not too far away, domestic longhair Gary (greatgramsofgary) power naps peacefully on a boulder overlooking the lake. 

Bodhi and Gary are two unique individual cats with a common dream: adventure. These daredevils partake in a growing and ongoing trend known as “adventure cats,” a lifestyle in which domestic cats are introduced to the great outdoors in pursuit of grand adventure. 

Adventure cats and their humans have hundreds of thousands of followers online– so what makes them so special? What sets adventure cats apart? 

These so-called “adventure cats” across Instagram have been on the rise for years now, their social-media origins beginning around 2013-2014, when introduced to the internet by Stephen Simmons. Simmons, an Iraq War veteran, found peace in the great outdoors with his cat Burma, and is likely the first to use the term “adventure cat.” With the further boom of social media, adventure cats’ following continues to grow, especially now with the rise of apps like TikTok. 

In 2015, adventurecats.org was launched by pet behaviorist Laura Moss. The site gained popularity quickly, and was nominated in 2016 for a People’s Voice Webby Award. One of the most popular and foundational articles on the site, 3 Essential Steps to Make Your Cat an Adventure Cat, walks new adventure cat enthusiasts through the beginning stages of training your cat to become an adventurer. 

The Adventure Lifestyle 

Adventure comes in many forms– some cats are “meowntaineers” (pun fully intended), while some are surfers, and others even take to the slopes. Simply search the hashtag #adventurecats on Instagram, and you’ll find hundreds of thousands of results! The diversity of outdoor activity is unparalleled: some adventure cats enjoy a simple hike, while others are bouldering fanatics. 

For example, Gary (greatgramsofgary) not only enjoys napping on the lake, but he also loves skiing with his human! With the proper safety gear, Gary is able to ride on his human’s shoulders down the mountain. The video clips on his Instagram profile are joy-filled and loads of fun to watch! Domestic Housecat to Grand Adventurer

Many adventure-cat owners have cautioned against forcing one’s cat into the adventure life. A significant portion of cats aren’t remotely interested in the adventure life, and some are simply not up to the physical strains of the lifestyle. On the other hand, some cats are natural-born adventurers, and love exploring the outdoors. Not all cats are the same! Regardless of whether your cat is an adventurer or not, they’re still one of the fluffy, loveable creatures we care for so much. 

If you’re new to the adventure cat world, and are interested in training your cat to become an “adventure cat,” it’s generally advised to begin with simple, small tasks. Most adventurers recommend starting off by letting your cat into your backyard or taking your cat on short neighborhood walks (with a harness!)  to see how they react before trying anything else.  All About Corgis 

Corgis are one of the most loyal and lovable dog breeds, outmeasuring their height in love, personality, and friendship!

There are two types of corgis– the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Although the Pembroke Corgi originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales, they both descend from the northern spitz dog line. The broader history of the corgi breed is untraceable and convoluted, however, as most of the breed’s history is hidden by folklore and fantastical tales. 

Corgis are small dogs, measuring about 10-12 inches in height, and generally weighing between 27-30 pounds. Although corgis are short, they have big personalities! 

Corgis are extremely high-energy, friendly, playful, and intelligent. They make wonderful family pets, and are great with kids. One of the most important things to know about Corgis, however, is that they shed– a LOT!

Are corgis well-behaved, or mischievous? 

cooperthecorgi__: Corgis are well behaved if they are trained well. Like any dog, they can have a little mischievous side to them when seeking attention from their owner. They can be very stubborn at times.

cantucorgis: Corgis are spirited, smart, athletic,  and dependable! Corgis are highly driven herding breed that requires mental and physical stimulation. They are definitely a family dog! 

thatcorgiwithatail: A bit of both! Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Cardigan Welsh Corgis are smart and trainable, but they can be stubborn and independent. Having big ears doesn’t mean they will always listen… We find Bailey has selective hearing, but her mischievous side keeps things interesting for us.

corgilouie: That depends on their upraising. Corgis are very eager to learn, both positive and negative habits. If you teach them positive habits, then they will be well-behaved dogs! 

What should someone know before adopting a corgi?

cooperthecorgi__: They shed A LOT. If you want a clean space 24-7, a corgi wouldn’t be for you. They also bark a lot and have high energy. They love seeking attention and being near their owners most of the time.

cantucorgis: Corgis are major shedders! They are double coated ( so never shave them) and shed all year long. Twice a year they usually blow out their coat (so corgi glitter everywhere)! Corgis are also vocal and tend to bark alot. It’s very important to keep them busy or they will chew chew chew.

thatcorgiwithatail: Corgis shed…A LOT. Every. Single. Day. Be prepared with a good vacuum and a few brushes for your dog and your upholstery. 😉 They have a lot of energy and need a moderate amount of exercise daily. They can also be very vocal. Bailey is not a big barker, but when she does bark, her ‘big dog’ barks will surprise you!

corgilouie: It’s important to know that a corgi is a herding breed for cattle. They are supposed to work all day, not lay on the couch like a lot of the photos you see on social media. They need a lot of mental and physical stimuli to be good family dogs – it’s like a small sized German Shepherd. (Actually a lot of people that want a German Shepherd, but in a smaller dog, find that in a Pembroke Welsh Corgi).

What can corgi owners do to be the best dog parent possible? 

cooperthecorgi__: Give their corgi plenty of attention. Walk them regularly and play with them to release their pent up energy. Keep them on a balanced, healthy diet because they are prone to joint issues with their short stature. You see a lot of “cute” overweight corgis on social media, but it’s not healthy for them. They can also overheat in hot weather because of their double coat so it’s good to keep them cool so they don’t get overheated. 

cantucorgis: Corgis are loving, smart, and caring. They love the attention.  They’re also very food motivated so always keep snacks handy! To have the best behaved corgi start training and grooming early. Make sure they get enough exercise daily! Also to crate train early to avoid chewing up things and easier to potty train!! 

thatcorgiwithatail: Help them maintain a healthy weight. Corgis love food! Avoid overfeeding them. Provide a good amount of exercise every day. Take the time to train and socialize. Be patient. Show them love every single day and you will see how affectionate and loving they can be. 

corgilouie: To be the best dog parents it is smart to sign up for puppy obedient classes to get help from the beginning. They need more than a walk around the block to be happy, so make sure you want to hike, train a dog sport of some kind and make them work.

What makes corgis unique from other dogs? 

cooperthecorgi__: They are very smart, intelligent dogs. They are very affectionate, but on their own terms. 

cantucorgis: Corgis have a Big Dog attitude with Short Legs! They’re are 2 types of corgis, Pembroke and Cardigan. They also come in many colors! They are known for having Floofy Butts! 

thatcorgiwithatail: Their short stumps! Even though corgis have short little legs, you would be surprised to see how quick and agile they can be. They are known for being “big dogs on short legs”. »

corgilouie: I think it’s safe to say it’s their short legs. A lot of people think corgis need special things because «they’re corgis», but in fact they are just like any other dog.

cantucorgis: Please do your research before buying or adopting from someone. They’re many scams going around!

corgilouie: My most important message to corgi owners and soon to be corgi owners is «do not let your dog get fat». Corgis often need less food than the package recommend. Look and feel your dog when feeding and not blindly follow food package recommendations. You should easily feel the ribs, the spine and their hips. It is better that they are slightly underweight than overweight with their strange body shape.

The first thing to know up front is that pet insurance doesn’t cover everything under the sun. Some medical ailments are covered, where others are not.

What pet insurance doesn’t cover: 

Generally, the conditions or procedures that pet insurance doesn’t cover are as listed below. These are considered less immediate medical needs, or needs that are not deemed necessary by insurance (whereas the needs listed above are considered necessary for treatment). 

Pet Insurance typically does not cover: 

• Cosmetic procedures 
• Breeding expenses 
• Pre-existing conditions 
• Preventative care 

Although most pet insurance plans do NOT cover preventative care, many plans have add-ons which will cover or reimburse you for preventative care needs such as vaccines and screenings. Again, it’s best to do your research before choosing a plan to see what works best for you. 

How much does pet insurance cost? 

The short answer is: it depends on the animal! There are a few factors to consider, including size, species/breed , age, and gender. For example, dogs, since they’re generally larger and more active than cats, have higher insurance costs. Some breeds are genetically predisposed to specific conditions, which may hike up insurance. Female pets are considered “lower risk” than males, so their insurance costs are generally less. Check with your local veterinarian or insurance agency to find out what your exact costs might be. 

You can also get a quote for an immediate estimate, although most pet insurance policies are different enough that you’ll want a quote or estimate from each one to compare. Is it worth it? 

This is entirely up to you! If your pet is at higher risk than most, or already has a lot of medical needs, the likelihood is that pet insurance could be the best thing that ever happened to them (and your wallet!).

Find a way your pet can look through a window 

Watching through windows can be quite entertaining for your pet– they’re able to observe the outside world without needing the company of their caretaker to watch over them. Cats especially love looking out windows at all the little backyard critters, and dogs love the stimulus of seeing people walk by. 

Leave toys around the house 

Leaving toys around the house is great for keeping your pets entertained! Here are a few ideas for toys to keep around the house:

All About Labs

In 2020, the Labrador Retriever was ranked the #1 most popular dog breed in the U.S. for the 30th year in a row! Each year, the American Kennel Club lists dog breeds in order of popularity throughout the country. Time and time again, Labs have topped the list. These loveable dogs are loyal, friendly, and kind, and have quite a history! 

Contrary to popular belief, Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland in the 1500s. The breed name’s origin is misleading, however, as the name originated in Canada, leading many to believe that the breed also originated there. 

During the 1500s in Newfoundland, Labs were commonly known as fisherman’s dogs. They trained to help with tasks such as pulling in fish nets or jumping into the waters to retrieve fallen fish. Their water-repellent coats and strong paws made them perfect for the job! 

It wasn’t until the 1800s that the breed began expanding across Europe, beginning with England, as the dogs became known for their skills in hunting and retrieving.

Today, Labradors are still a faithful and eager breed, although their relationships with humans have changed quite a bit. While they’re still great dogs to take fishing and hunting, they’re extremely loyal and make great family pets.

Are Labs well-behaved, or mischievous? 

apollo_choc_lab: Both. Mischievous but very trainable. Labs are wild and crazy for about the first 3 years.

monster.mackk: I would say they are generally well-behaved and easy to train. Of course, they all have their quirks and may be mischievous at times… like stealing things around the house ????

farley_the_labrador: Labs are like most other dogs. If they aren’t given enough physical and mental stimulation, they will find other outlets for their energy. This can lead to mischievous behaviour if left unattended. They are very loving dogs and are very eager to please. 

rosie_lab_life: I believe labradors and all dogs are well behaved if the boundaries are put in early. Apart from the general chewing things etc that all pups go through, Rosie is a good girl. She likes to chew things up so we cater for this with old boxes and stuff that she can explore.

What should someone know before adopting a Labrador?

apollo_choc_lab: They are big dogs. Very loyal. Labs need a companion and a family, they aren’t good backyard dogs. 

monster.mackk: Before adopting a lab, it’s extremely important to understand that they are high energy and require a lot of exercise. They need the mental stimulation, and when they don’t get it is when they may act out. Do not get a lab if you just want a lap dog to sit around and be lazy with (of course they love to cuddle, but after they’ve been worn out).

farley_the_labrador: Labs are not couch potatoes. They require a lot of exercise and stimulation. They were bred for hunting and retrieving, which means living an active lifestyle. Be sure you’re capable of providing adequate exercise before bringing home a Labrador Retriever. 

rosie_lab_life: Labradors are very very loving and love to have your attention. They love to cuddle and are extremely loyal. Labradors can be very food motivated, so beware you’re not leaving food around! They will find it! They will eat it! On the other hand, good high value food is very good at teaching heel walking and other skills. 

What can Lab owners do to be the best dog parent possible? 

apollo_choc_lab: Train, train, train. Trained labs with clear boundaries are much happier. Also, keep a strict feeding regimen. Labs tend to overeat and can gain weight which is unhealthy for the pup. 

monster.mackk: Exercise them, bring them on doggy dates, take them on hikes, let them swim! The more socializing the better. 

farley_the_labrador: Attend training classes with your dog. It’s important to learn how to work as team and build a strong bond. This will help you learn how to set them up for success and how to manage unwanted behaviours.  

rosie_lab_life: I’d say to ensure you have time to give them. Ensure you have decent insurance, as the bills can be very pricey. If not insurance, have a set amount put away. 

What makes Labradors unique from other dogs? 

apollo_choc_lab: Labs have a very high drive to please. Loyal beyond loyal and are the absolute best family dog, hunting dog, working dog. It’s a breed that can do it all. 

monster.mackk: Labs are super loyal and smart. You can train them to do anything, whether it be random tricks or learning how to hunt (they’re “retrievers” for a reason!).

rosie_lab_life: Labradors are very willing to please. They are good at reading people’s moods and emotions. Rosie can tell if a person/dog  is a dog person/dog or not. She also is very good at being gentle with the younger pups.

Is there anything else you think people should know about Labs? 

apollo_choc_lab: If you get a Lab, be ready to give it your heart. ❤️

monster.mackk: If you’re looking for a dog that will be your shadow, make you laugh, and be the best cuddler, labs are the way to go!

Adopting a cat is no small feat! While cats are wildly independent, they’re also kind and loving creatures who need attentive care. Whenever adopting a new animal into your home, it’s of the utmost importance to prepare your home as a welcoming environment! That’s why, along with wisdom from our Lilly Brush Community, we’ve compiled 6 things you should know before adopting a cat:

What supplies should you get before adopting a cat?

1. Food 
2. Bowls (for food and water) 
3. Litter and litter box 
4. Toys 
5. Bed (optional) 

christian_the_cat: I would recommend getting the basics pet supplies such a food, bowls, litter and litter-box, a few toys, a brush and maybe even a bed. I would also make sure you have a enough time and space for the cat.

greatgramsofgary: cats are pretty self sufficient so you won’t need too much – a few litter boxes (we have three different ones around the house), food, and a food and water bowl are the bare necessities. You could also grab a bed, a few toys, and possibly a cat tower to help make your home a bit more welcoming. Each cat has different preferences so you can buy more things as you figure what your new furry friend likes.

mrbingleymainecoon: Litter Box – and all that goes with it. Felted cat cave, feather wand toy, light weight ball toy, (homemade or purchased), scratcher that is adjustable in case your cat has a preferred scratching position, comb/brush.

How do you know which breed is best for you?

christian_the_cat: To know what the best breed is for you do research, look at different breeds to see what the care is for that breed. Find one that fits your lifestyle. And always consider shelter animals! 

greatgramsofgary: Generally speaking cats at a shelter will be mostly just domestic cats, and not any one specific breed (Gary for example is just a domestic longhair) This should work for most people. If you are looking to get a specific cat from a breeder you should talk to them about any breed specific requirements to make sure that breed fits your lifestyle. Some, particularly exotic cats like bengals and Savannahs have very high energy and aren’t suited to all homes. 

mrbingleymainecoon: Consider your home life, if you want a cat that is more independent, if you can enrich an active breed’s life with lots of play, puzzles or leash training. Big versus small breed and how much they eat. Everything costs just a bit more for the bigger breeds. If you’re allergic to cats, there are a few breeds that might still work for you. Long hair breeds take more maintenance to keep the fur in good condition. 

Which cat food should you buy?

Ask your vet first! Do your research and find out which food is best for your cats– but before you do that, here’s what our Instagram friends have to say: 

christian_the_cat: I would ask a vet for the best food or get a food that has what your cat would need to make sure they are getting the right things in the food such as kitten or older cat food. I use Meow Mix for dry food and the wet food I give Christian is Fancy Feast or Meow Mix.

greatgramsofgary: This is pretty cat specific. We feed our cats a prescription Royal Canin Dental food. Gary has had urinary crystallization issues in the past and we found he does well on these. You can talk with your vet about different food options. We avoid raw food, but if that’s what you’d like to feed your cat be very very choosy about picking a raw diet. They can transmit diseases like E. coli, and not all of them are nutritionally complete, again, your vet can help find a good option.

mrbingleymainecoon: If you’re buying a purebred from a breeder, have a conversation with them about this. If you’re adopting, have a conversation with your vet. 

How much time and attention should you devote to your cat each day?

christian_the_cat: I would give your cat as much attention as you can or as much attention as your cat wants. It can depend of the cat and what they need. 

greatgramsofgary: starting to sound like a broken record, but again it will vary based on your cat. Gary is fairly independent and doesn’t like attention unless he asks for it – he will come to us to ask for pets or cuddles and then leave when he’s had enough. His brother Carl is very affectionate and will cuddle for hours at a time. Cats are pretty good at communicating their needs, so take the lead from them!

mrbingleymainecoon: As much as necessary to make the relationship mutually rewarding. No cat is the same in this case.

What health needs should you consider? 

Some of the most common health considerations for cats include: 

1. Vet check-ins 
2. Regular brushing 
3. Flea and tick prevention/treatment 
4. Clean and quality litter 
5. Nail trimming 
6. Pet insurance 
7. Toxic household or garden plants 
8. Vaccines
9. Shedding care

christian_the_cat: You should always get a yearly check up at the vet. Cats will need to be brushed regularly. They also need some type of flea and tick protection if they go outside or are around other animals.  Picking a good litter is important so your cat is happy and healthy. 

greatgramsofgary: For the most part cats are relatively low maintenance pets but they do have some needs. You can help with grooming at home by brushing their teeth, trimming their nails and brushing their fur to help prevent matting. They should also get annual checkups at the vet at a minimum. We have health insurance on all our pets except Carl, who was too old to qualify when we adopted him. While this doesn’t cover routine visits it will cover the cost of emergency care or health conditions your pet develops over time (make sure you read the policy so you know what is and isn’t covered!. Both our cats have heart issues and get regular checkups from the cardiologist, Carl has asthma which we manage at home with puffers. While not as frequent as dogs, cats can get into things they’re not supposed to, so avoid having toxic plants at home, and keep a close eye on them if you have tinsel at Christmas or if they’re playing with string. Both can be hazardous. 

mrbingleymainecoon: If buying a purebred make sure your breeder has documented proof of all medical and genetic history. Vet needs and whether or not you want to buy pet insurance should be considered. Also whether or not you should microchip. Don’t forget to plan for annual wellness and vaccines and for spay/neuter costs. Consider vet bills are very expensive and realistically if you can afford an unexpected major surgery. 

What else new cat owners should know?  

christian_the_cat: Cats can be a lot of work but they are worth it! Cats are loving and fun.

mrbingleymainecoon: The attachment and love you feel for a pet should be strong. If it isn’t or you want to get it to make your children happy don’t get one unless you will be happily having it. Some cats just don’t turn out to have the greatest personalities. Consider what you might do if you don’t get along.

It’s important to remember that adult animals need love and care too, and that they’re just as fun, lovable, and special as baby animals.

Shelters improve community by building a safe environment for lost and abandoned animals. They encourage adoption, fostering a deeper sense of community and inspiring people to help in whatever way they can. 

5. You inspire others to adopt from shelters

Why are regular vet visits important?

Our pets don’t always communicate with us in ways that we can understand– your dog or cat can’t simply tell you that something is wrong, or indicate through their barking or meowing specifically that something’s up. While as pet owners, we’re able to notice the subtle changes in their behaviors or vocalizing, we don’t always know for sure what the issue is. 

Since we want the best for our pets, we want to prioritize their health! The best way to make sure your pet is healthy and safe is to schedule regular visits with your vet. Most veterinarians recommend an annual checkup– this way, they can catch any unknown underlying conditions, prevent disease, take special care of aging pets, and answer questions. 

Why should I schedule regular visits with my vet? 

Underlying conditions: With the exception of changing behavior, our pets aren’t able to communicate clearly with us. Even if their behavior changes, it’s not always a clear indicator that something’s wrong– but it IS a good idea to visit your vet if this happens. By checking in with your vet, even if only to “be on the safe side,” you’re more likely to catch any lurking underlying conditions that you weren’t aware of. It’s always better to “be on the safe side”! 

Preventing disease: Along with catching underlying conditions, regular trips to the vet help prevent disease. If you work PROactively for your pet’s health, you maintain their health, and in some cases, improve it! Work against disease BEFORE it happens, rather than after– saving you time and money,  and keeping your pet happy, healthy, and joyful! 

Aging pets: As our pets age, we must care for them in different ways. Older pets have different needs than younger pets, and require more attention in different ways. Vets are well-acquainted with specific behavioral needs, and understand the changes that come with age well enough to address them and give you advice for proper care. 

Answering questions: Vets are specialists– which is why we go to them with our questions and concerns. You can do all the internet research in the world and still not have the breadth of knowledge of a practicing veterinarian. Vets give you immediate, personal answers to questions, and take the time and care to know your pet before jumping to conclusions– something you’re in danger of if you only stick to internet research!

Hiking is a fun and exciting activity– especially if you bring your BFF (Best Furry Friend) along with you! As fun as hiking is, there are still dangers on the trail. Here are eight safety tips for hiking with your dog:

1. Always use a leash 

While your dog may be perfectly trained and well-behaved, leashes are still necessary for trail hiking. Trails are distracting places (for humans and dogs alike), where there are so many lovely things to marvel at as you go along! They’re also generally high foot traffic areas, and even if your dog is well-behaved, you may run into trouble when another dog passes by, or if another person comes along to distract your dog. Some people aren’t comfortable around dogs, while some might be frightened by them in public, so it’s always best for you to have control if something goes wrong. There are even some trails that require a leash for all dogs at all times, so make sure to do your research ahead of time so you’re prepared! 

2. Pack the proper gear 

It’s not really hiking if you leave the house without all your proper equipment! Here are a few basic items you should always take when you go hiking with your dog: 

1. Collar or harness 
2. Leash 
3. Collapsible bowl for water
4. Plenty of water and treats! 
5. First Aid kits: Me and My Dog First Aid Kit  
6. Doggie bags 
7. Identification tag 

3. Assess potential dangers ahead of time 

Even on the safest of trails, there’s a myriad of animal species that you probably aren’t aware of! Find out which species tend to linger around the trail, and keep an eye out for anything potentially hazardous to dogs. Some things you’ll want to look out for are snakes, bears, cougars, and poisonous plants. (Note: The # 1 reason for bear attacks on humans is due to dogs antagonizing or stumbling across one. Be sure to do your research, keep your dog on leash, and be prepared with bear spray just in case.) 

Potential hazards don’t just include other animals– you should also be wary of the landscape and weather. Watch out for and be cautious of the following: 

1. Open water 
2. Cliff/mountain sides 
3. Rough terrain 
4. Too much sun (watch out for heatstroke and dehydration) 
5. Contaminated water (only let your dog drink the water you’ve brought with you) 

As long as you’re prepared and paying attention, you’ll be just fine. 

4. Pack extra water and treats 

It’s important for both you and your pup to stay hydrated and energized while on the trail! Your dog’s hydration on long trails is of the utmost importance– hiking is extremely taxing and can dehydrate your dog quickly. Bring fresh water along with you (some for you, and some for your dog) since unknown contaminants might lurk in water you find along the trail. Some dog owners train their dogs to drink from the bottle, while others bring a compact, collapsible bowl. Either way works! Likewise, to keep up your dog’s energy, be sure to pack treats. Bring treats that are packed full of nutrients, and will sustain your dog’s energy throughout the hike. 

5. Take breaks 

Breaks are important for check-ins, water and treat stops, and catching your breath. A good rule of thumb is: if you need water, snacks, or a break, your dog probably does too. Even if you don’t need a break yet, pay attention to how your dog is handling the hike, and stay in tune to their needs. For example, panting is a clear sign that your dog needs a break and/or water. 

6. Leave nothing behind 

This is where your doggy bags come in handy! Since you are visitors in nature, and to the trail, the courteous thing to do is ALWAYS pick up after your dog. This is commonly referred to as “Leave No Trace,” indicating you’ll clean up so well after your dog that there’s no evidence you were even there. Not only is it courteous to nature, but it’s also courteous to fellow hikers on the trail. 

7. Watch out for anything your dog tries to ingest along the trail 

Dogs are naturally curious creatures, and learn by experiencing the world around them! They tend to sometimes be a little TOO curious– and end up eating things they definitely shouldn’t. Younger dogs and puppies are far more prone to ingesting something dangerous on trails, so keep an extra close eye out if you’re not hiking with a dog who is wise and experienced. 

8. Have a post-hike check in with your dog 

The first thing you should do when you get home from the hike is check for ticks, burs, or anything else that might have clung to your dog somewhere along the way. Consider giving your dog a bath– if you choose not to, make sure you still wipe down their paws to protect from any potential irritants. Give your dog plenty of water and space to rest. Golden retrievers are one of the most loyal, loving, and energetic dog breeds! They are so loved, in fact, that golden retrievers have remained the number one most popular dog in the U.S. since 1991 (next to the Labrador Retriever, their close cousin). 

Known for their friendliness and intelligence, golden retrievers make great family dogs, and are highly skilled and capable of various tasks. Goldens are also often seen in law enforcement due to their keen abilities in athletics, agility, and obedience.

Are goldens well-behaved, or mischievous? 

molsonandmaple: Our goldens are well-behaved but they definitely have a mischievous side! (It makes things more exciting haha)

copley_thegoldengirl: Goldens are smart! So I think they can be easily trained to be well-behaved. But, if not trained can be mischievous. It’s all about what you allow in my opinion! 

good.boys.nash.mac: Goldens in my experience have all been well behaved, once in a while you find a ripped toy or a shoe but that’s any dog ???? 

mikeyandruthie: All dogs are unique, but in my experience golden retrievers are very trainable but they have a playful, mischievous side. They’re the perfect combination of well-behaved but not too well-behaved. 

What should someone know before adopting a golden retriever?

molsonandmaple: Goldens tend to hide their physical pain to make sure they don’t worry their owners. Invest in health insurance for them and get them checked routinely. Also invest in a good vacuum 🙂 

copley_thegoldengirl: They have a lot of energy! Goldens definitely thrive on attention from people and are very active dogs. A common misconception is that Goldens are super calm and relaxed..they can be but they also are very playful and like to be active.

good.boys.nash.mac: Before adopting a golden retriever it’s important to know how much they shed and how big they can get. 

mikeyandruthie: Golden retrievers, especially when they are young, can be incredibly high-energy and need a lot of exercise and attention. They’re loyal and loving and forgiving, and they’re also complete goofballs in the best way. Goldens sometimes counter surf so keep your food put away, and know that they are mouthy and tend to carry around whatever treasures they find (which may range from a stick to your shoe to a priceless family heirloom). Be prepared for mass shedding and resign yourself to finding dog hair EVERYWHERE

What can golden retriever owners do to be the best dog parent possible? 

molsonandmaple: Golden retrievers thrive on quality time whether that be going on an adventure or just sitting on the couch with them. Be present and they will thrive!

copley_thegoldengirl: Have patience and be committed to training, exercising, and taking care of your dog’s needs. Goldens are big shedders so you need to be committed to keeping up with that, as well as they are prone to allergies/sensitivities/health issues which can be a lot of work. 

good.boys.nash.mac: Golden retriever owners should just be ready to share all their love! Goldens love being loved and sharing love, they’ll follow you everywhere you go and lay right on top of you ! 

mikeyandruthie: Train them from a young age, be patient and gentle with them, and be prepared to make sure they get the exercise they need to spend their puppy energy. Many goldens love to eat so be sure to regulate their food. But above all, show them love each and every day and they’ll return it 100 times over. 

What makes goldens unique from other dogs? 

molsonandmaple: We think all dog breeds are incredible and perfect in every way but for us personally, Golden Retrievers are unique with how hard they love. They love wholeheartedly and truly always put themselves before you. It’s incredible.

copley_thegoldengirl: Goldens are an extremely loyal and loving breed. That’s my favorite part about them!

good.boys.nash.mac: I think golden retrievers are some of the smartest dogs. You really can teach them anything and they learn at such a young age! In my experience all of my goldens have been potty trained within 2 weeks or less, and never had problems learning new tricks. 

mikeyandruthie: Goldens are, to me, the best dogs because they are complete goobers and unashamed about it. They’re generally so good-natured and loving, and find joy in the simplest things. 

Is there anything else you think people should know about golden retrievers? 

molsonandmaple: Golden Retrievers love structure and attention. 5 minute training sessions every day helps train their mind and gives them the quality time with you that they adore!

copley_thegoldengirl: Something I didn’t know before we chose our breeder was that there are two different types of Goldens- Field and Show. Field have more energy than Show and are a more athletic build.

good.boys.nash.mac: If you’re thinking about getting a golden retriever just know they’re one of the most friendliest, loveable dogs. They’re great with kids, and They’re always ready to play with their energy and love adventures!

mikeyandruthie: If you’re looking for a dog who will be the best, most loyal and loving companion and simply ask that you give them the same in return, you can’t go wrong with a golden. They are truly angels among us.

Is detailing your full-time job? If so, when did it become full-time? 

So yes, detailing is my full time job. It became full time at the beginning of April 2018, so luckily i’ve been able to stay in this industry full time for the last three years– loving every bit of it! 

What detailer did you look up to/who taught you how to detail?

My dad actually taught me how to detail at 15 years old. I was always neat and organized, overall “OCD” like most detailers, and I caught on rather quickly and just fell in love with it. 

My great buddy Max Heisy out of Florida had a business called Maximum Detailing; he was always somebody that I always looked up to. Anytime I had any questions or concerns as to how to go about something, I could shoot him over a call or a text and he would always answer my messages. 

Do you mentor other detailers? 

Yes, I do. One in particular, his name is Jacob, owner of JDubs Mobile Services back home in Crestview, Florida. So Jacob is 16 years old, and I’ve known him for a while; his dad is a guy that I’ve been friends with for multiple years. When Jacob saw that I dropped everything in Florida to move up here to Georgia, to pursue my dreams, he found that very inspiring and figured he’d give it a shot. 

Who are a few other detailers that you follow or admire? 

So, I follow and admire tons of detailers in the local Atlanta area, overseas or here in the U.S., and I would say the top three are: Jason from Chicago Auto Pros out of Chicago, David from Finishing Touch– he’s in Tennessee– and then Stefan with Authentic Detail out of California.

May 20th is an annual holiday known as National Rescue Dog Day! This holiday was first created by Lisa Wiehebrink (from Tails that Teach) as a way to bring awareness to the overwhelming number of homeless and rescue dogs in shelters and on the streets. It has continued as such a holiday over the past few years, and this year, we’ve cultivated a list of ways you can join in and participate with your local community! 

According to ASPCA, more than 3 million dogs are admitted to shelters each year. Together, we can lower that number and bring change to our communities. Below are five ways you can contribute to the well-being of rescue dogs in your community! 

What can you do? 

Celebrate Your Rescue Dog: If you already have rescue dogs, take a day to celebrate them! The best work you can do always starts in your own home, so celebrating your own dogs is a perfect way to start off celebrating National Rescue Dog Day. You can treat your dog to a new toy, a treat, or a fun day outside! Post about your dog online to spread awareness for National Rescue Dog Day and inspire others to become rescue dog parents as well. 

Adopt: Any pet you welcome into your home requires love, care, and attention. If you choose to adopt, take the time to get to know your dog so that you understand the best ways to care for and bond with him/her. Adoption offsets the shocking number of dogs without homes, and is the best way to give a dog a chance at a better life. Dogs need love, care, and attention, especially after transitioning from the shelter life to home life. Adopting a rescue dog isn’t only great for the dog, but it’s also great for you! Rescue dogs are known to be sweet and loving creatures, who often have just as much to teach us as we have to teach them. As wonderful and tempting as adoption is, please only adopt if you are able!

Foster: If you’re unable to adopt, but still have space for a pet in your home to care for, fostering is the next best thing! Fostering provides a temporary home for a rescue dog who needs a stable place to be cared for until they find their forever home. 

Volunteer at a Shelter: If you love dogs but are unable to take on the responsibility of adopting or fostering, a great alternative is to volunteer at a local shelter. Volunteering is a wonderful way to be involved in your local community and invest in the future of the many shelter and rescue dogs in your neighborhood. 

Donate: The best option for those who aren’t able to make the adoption commitment and are unable to volunteer at a shelter is donating! There are many options for donating– you can provide financial aid, or you can package together a bundle of things to donate! All About Aussies

Given their name, it’s easy to assume Australian Shepherds originated in Australia. Instead, the breed’s origin is the western United States! Mysteriously enough, there are no clear answers as to why the breed is named after the Land Down Under. They were originally bred to herd livestock during the California Gold Rush of the 1840s, hence the name Shepherd, and were later accepted as faithful pets. 

Despite their more common lifestyle as household pets, Aussies (their common nickname) live their best life when they have a job to do. They need significant space for running and playing, while their highly energetic nature requires consistent time and attention from their owners. Although young Aussies require more attention, their need for it doesn’t diminish much as they grow older. 

Australian Shepherds are one of the most loyal and loving dog breeds, and are well worth the time and effort put into caring for them. However, if you’re thinking about adopting an Aussie, make sure you have more than enough time and energy to devote to this loving dog– otherwise, choose a different breed of a less energetic demeanor. Too many Aussies are adopted based on looks, and end up in shelters because their owners were unable to give them the proper care and attention they need.

These Aussie owners have years of experience, and while some of them don’t consider themselves “experts,” they have a wealth of knowledge about this loyal, devoted breed. Aussies are known as one of the most energetic yet loyal dog breeds of all, and these owners are here to tell you all about it.

Are Aussies well-behaved, or mischievous? 

skyeblu_aussie: Both ???? they’re extremely intelligent dogs and pick up on things very quickly, even bad behaviors so they think they can get away with anything. But with proper and consistent training, they can be extremely well behaved and loving pets!

storm_theausshepherd: I think their behavior depends on the amount of exercise and fulfillment they get each day. Storm is pretty laid back but some Aussie’s will get into trouble at home if their instinctual needs aren’t met each day. 

remremthetoyaussie: Aussies, like other dogs,  can be very mischievous if you do not give them structure everyday. They are super smart so they can think of things to get into if they are bored ???? 

apollothelilaussie: I think they’re a bit of both! They are very smart so can be trained to behave well but if they get bored they can get mischievous! 

bunnyandclydetheaussies: Easy to train- so – well behaved when they’re in training mode, but very mischievous and naughty ???? (depends on the individual dog and their personality. Both of my dogs are soooo different!) 

oakleyandsaige: I think this depends on the dogs personality / age. Our puppy was a nutcase out of the gate and we’ve had to put in a lot of time into training her! I’d say she’s naturally more mischievous which I think is more common for the breed. Our older boy, who is a rescue, has always been timid and shy and more on the well behaved side but has a lot of anxiety about the outside world which I think is because of his previous owner neglecting him. Once he’s accepted you into his circle he’s the biggest love bug. Aussies unfortunately end up in shelters a lot because people buy off looks and are surprised by the energy level ☹️ 

What should someone know before adopting an Australian shepherd?

skyeblu_aussie: Be prepared for A LOT of energy!! Make sure you have ample time to give them the attention and exercise they need.

storm_theausshepherd: definitely research the breed! They are  typically high energy and if you aren’t going to be compatible with the breed, you will most likely develop some issues.  They’re also “velcro dogs” and love to follow you around everywhere. They will be a loyal member of the family. 

remremthetoyaussie:  They NEED to run! Not just walk everyday.  They need a ton of exercise.  We walk ours about 2-3 miles a day but we play fetch an hour plus a day! They need it all, they have a ton of energy! 

apollothelilaussie: Know they are high energy dogs that require a lot of exercise and stimulation. Their coats also can require a lot of brushing, especially in shedding seasons. 

bunnyandclydetheaussies:  THEY TAKE A LOT OF WORK AND TRAINING! Also- socialize, socialize, socialize. They are very loyal to their family and owners, but can often be very protective. They also can show signs of resource guarding too. Also, Aussies tend to be shadow dogs and don’t do well being left home alone for hours on end. They need not only exercise, but lots of mental stimulation. They love to work! Also, they shed like crazy!!!!!! So be prepared to brush and vacuum all the time. Also- Aussies tend to get potty cling ons – so doggy potty wipes are a must!

oakleyandsaige: They need a lot of exercise, training and love. Mental stimulation a must! They are “Velcro” dogs and will pick their people. They are very loyal but can be weary of strangers in certain situations. They can also be protective over their home. Lots of barking to alert.

What can Aussie owners do to be the best dog parent possible? 

Skyeblu_aussie: Consistently is key. Aussies like to be worked or given a task – so the more one on one training time with them the better! Other than that, adventure with them, care for them, and give them all the love in the world!☺️

storm_theausshepherd: Again, I can’t stress enough how important it is to research ANY breed before getting a dog. It’s to important to make sure you’re compatible. This will make you the best dog parent. If you love to be adventurous and get exercise, your Aussie will be right by your side having a great time with you! 

remremthetoyaussie: Learn what your dog needs. Listen to their needs. Aussies especially need exposure to ALL situations. Anything new they are super nervous, but also can be super guarded of their person. If they are doing undesirable behaviors it is prob because they need to run and play to get that herding energy out. 

apollothelilaussie: Aussies owners can make sure to give their dog lots of stimulation, good training and tons of love to be the best dog parent! 

bunnyandclydetheaussies: Find what makes their pups happiest. Teach their pups new tricks, give them a new challenge like having them jump up on things or make an agility course, give them puzzles or snuffle mats. Make them work for their food! They are sooo happy when they feel they earned their meals. Most importantly give them all the love and cuddles because they’re super needy and affectionate dogs. They love human attention.

oakleyandsaige: Exercise and mental stimulation! If they are bored they become destructive and their worst selves ????. Also, when out and about, learn their body language and know when they feel uncomfortable. Aussies tend to be on the sensitive side so you never want to negatively impact their emotions and cause a fear based aggression. Positive reinforcement training is a wonderful tool!

What makes Aussies unique from other dogs? 

skyeblu_aussie: Their coating, stamina, loyalty and intellect!

storm_theausshepherd: They are a very intelligent breed, love to work and herd which is very fun to watch!

remremthetoyaussie: Aussies are true “Velcro” dogs they have their human. They can be very protective of that person. But they LOVE that person with every ounce of their being.  They are amazing dogs to have. 

apollothelilaussie: Aussies are unique because they are a herding dog so can be suitable to be put to work. They can also be great family pets with the proper exercise! Aussies also come in many unique colours. Some Aussies have docked tails and some breeders now leave their tails undocked.

bunnyandclydetheaussies: They are seriously the most loyal dogs. They are so in tune to emotions and feelings. They know love to be companion dogs so bring them everywhere with you if you can! They are also so stinking cute! 

oakleyandsaige: They are like people to me ???? they have so much going on in their brains and they are constantly thinking and processing information. They are incredible companions and will make you feel like the most special person in the world. Oh and the fluff is amazing. 

Is there anything else you think people should know about Australian shepherds? 

skyeblu_aussie: I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – SO. MUCH. ENERGY!

storm_theausshepherd: They are a very loyal and loving breed. They call them the velcro or shadow breed because they will follow you around everywhere. Very smart easy to train. There are great Aussie Rescues out there with awesome pups for adoption. If you get from a breeder, do your research and make sure they are a reputable and humane breeder ☺️

remremthetoyaussie: Aussies are just amazing and silly dogs, they make everyday interesting and different in a good way❤️

bunnyandclydetheaussies: if you can’t invest 14-16+ years of hard work, training, and dedication then an Aussie is not for you. My almost 11 year old Aussie still acts like she’s 5. The training never ends. The challenging them never ends. But they are so worth the hard work!

oakleyandsaige: Don’t get an Aussie because they are pretty dogs. They eat up a lot of free time and do take work. Lots of training and socializing is a must.   Ideally from a young age. They need to be brushed often too. Also get a Lilly brush! Their hair will get everywhere once their undercoat comes in ????

Let’s face it: cats are fabulous, and don’t get the credit they deserve!

In honor of our feline friends, here are 5 ways to spoil your cat. 

Buy or make new cat toys

What do cats love more than new toys? A lot of things, probably, but new toys are no doubt a crowd-pleaser. The simplest toys are often the best– you can even make your own for no cost at all! 

Scratching posts are great for your cat’s playtime and health, so if you choose to not go the toy route, this is a great alternative. Check out this video to see the benefits of scratching posts: 

And sometimes, all your cat wants is a new box. 

Conduct a photo shoot

Let your cat channel their inner Vogue model– we all know it’s there already. Captured photos of your cat become representative of treasured memories. After the photo shoot, you can always choose to keep the photos to yourself, frame them, edit, or put them on anything ranging from pillows to mugs! The best websites for this are Shutterfly and Snapfish. 

Here’s how to get the best shots: 

• Use your angles! Photographing from different angles will enhance the quality of your results, and lends to more creative and artistic photos. 
• Don’t shy away from drama– in fact, seek out the drama in each photo you take. Play with different perspectives to capture your cat’s personality, from sweetness to sassiness, and everything in between. 
• Shoot photos in semi-automatic mode– this will capture movement more precisely, and is ideal if you’re all about those action shots. 
• Zoom in on the eyes! Cats’ eyes are one of their most stunning qualities– if you can capture the uniqueness of your cat’s eyes, you’ve won the cat photography prize. This is also one of the most dramatic shots you can get. 

Build a cat patio

Remember when we asked what cats love more than new toys? Aside from “alone time,” the answer is “being outdoors!” Cats are naturally drawn to the world outside your home, and sometimes this world is a dangerous place. If your cat isn’t equipped to handle the outdoors on his or her own (i.e. is declawed, has been raised indoors their whole life, etc.), then one of the best things for them is a cat patio! 

It’s easy to build your own cat patio (or “catio”)– there are many online guides for how to build your own. All you need is adequate space and the proper materials, all of which can be found here or here. Be sure to follow a guide if you have minimal experience building large enclosures. 

If you’re not quite as handy with tools, or don’t have time to build your own, you can also purchase one! The downside to this is that you can’t construct it yourself with the features or size you want. Although buying one won’t save you money, it will save you time. 

Treat your cat to a spa day

Cats need pampering too! Setting up a spa day for your cat looks a lot different than a human spa day, however. Be sure to heavily research whichever “spa day” methods you choose before proceeding to ensure your cat’s safety and well-being. 

Here are our favorite cat spa day activities:

• Set up a scratching post station.
• Trim your cat’s nails (be very careful with this one– and if you’ve never done it yourself before, consult a professional beforehand or take your kitty to the groomer). 
• Brush your cat.
• Bathe/wash your cat. This is entirely dependent on your cat’s personality– some cats love getting bathed, but most hate it! Since cats are self-cleaning animals, this is usually not necessary.

What can you do as a consumer? 

1. Look for the Leaping Bunny icon 

To gain approval, along with the Leaping Bunny icon, companies must comply with the terms necessary to achieving the Leaping Bunny Standard. In order to reach the standard, products must be 100% free of any animal testing– especially “new” animal testing. The companies’ suppliers must also make the same pledge to be approved for the Leaping Bunny’ recognition. 

The Leaping Bunny logo guarantees a high standard of product creation quality, especially considering the federal standards companies in the US and Canada. While companies are generally allowed to market their products as “cruelty-free,” the term doesn’t carry nearly as many restrictions as the Leaping Bunny does. This means that “cruelty-free” doesn’t always mean “cruelty-free.” However, products that carry the Leaping Bunny Logo are guaranteed to be genuinely cruelty-free. You can view the list of approved companies here, or click here for Leaping Bunny’s Frequently Asked Questions page. 

2. Follow trusted guides 

Just as Leaping Bunny provides a list of approved companies, there are other organizations that do the same thing. One of these is the Shop With Your Heart Brand List— a list that is approved by ASPCA, or the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The list provides trusted food producers that are cruelty-free approved, and has an easy-to-follow guide where you can check ethical qualities by specific food type. 

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, has a list of ethically sourced and vegan beauty companies, which you can find here. PETA-approved companies aren’t held to quite as high standards as Leaping Bunny, so be sure to do extra research into material sourcing and manufacturing of each brand before you buy. 

3. Read product labels 

Be careful when it comes to the term “cruelty-free”– according to Leaping Bunny, it doesn’t always mean what you think it means. The words “cruelty-free” can represent a wide spectrum of meanings, each held to different standards. Reading product labels for specifics will give you a clearer picture as to which companies are actually as transparent as they claim to be. The FDA doesn’t regulate the use of “cruelty-free,” “not tested on animals,” or “this finished product not tested on animals” rhetoric. Just because the finished product wasn’t tested on animals doesn’t mean that one of the ingredients was tested on animals (somewhere else by a different company before being added to the finished product). 

4. Be aware of listed ingredients 

Look into ingredients and treatments of the products you consume and purchase. Ethical brands and companies must comply with federal regulations, but there are still loopholes in the system. Finding where each ingredient is sourced from will guide you to other companies where you can inspect their regulations. If sourced ingredients contain high regulations, you’re good to go! 

5. Read company policies 

If you have the time to look into each company’s specific policies, do so! You’ll be able to find out quickly which companies are transparent and open about their sourcing and creating of products, and which companies are not. Over the past ten years, huskies have grown significantly in popularity, jumping from the 25th most sought after breed to the 12th. These strong, athletic dogs are a favorite breed for active pet owners. Huskies make great companions for pet owners who have the adequate time and energy to devote to these beloved dogs. 

Siberian Huskies originated in Siberia in Northeast Asia, and were largely brought to the United States by Alaskans during the 20th century. Primarily used as sled dogs, the breed expanded to the rest of the United States and became well-loved by many Americans across the nation. There are many subsets of the breed, including the Labrador Husky and the Alaskan Klee Kai. It’s easy to confuse the Alaskan Malamute or the Samoyed with the Husky breed, but they’re actually different! Although they share many similarities, the breeds are separate.

Huskies are a special breed, and require lots of time and energy from their owners. They’re well worth the effort, however, as these dogs are extremely lovable and loyal! Do huskies have a sense of humor, or are they mischievous? 

thehuskymoon: Definitely both! Moon (the husky) is so funny and also gets into any and everything food related.

huskymayauk: I think they are mischievous without meaning to be hilarious! They know full well when they’re being naughty but they won’t except no for an answer, they are the best at ignoring you and arguing back! It’s very hard to be angry at their naughtiness as their facial expressions and attitude are hilarious! They are full of personality and very clever! They only hear what they want to hear!

the_husky_whisperer: Yes and yes ???? they have a great sense of humor with a touch of mischievousness!

tuckerleo_da_huskies: I think both! They are intelligent and also independent, which can make them get into trouble! But they also love to play and be silly. 

What should someone know before adopting a husky? 

thehuskymoon: They require a lot of exercise this is not a breed that you can just let run in the yard you have to walk / run / hike and trips to dog parks to get them tired

huskymayauk: Exercise is everything! Huskies need a lot of exercise and they have so much energy to burn! If they don’t get the right amount of exercise they will be unmanageable in the house! They are a working breed they are not just pretty eyes and fluff balls! You need to spend time with this breed you if you don’t have a lot of time the breed is not for you. Huskies end up in rescue for this very reason.

the_husky_whisperer: They are a high energy working dog… Prepare for this!

tuckerleo_da_huskies: I think it is important to understand the level of care a husky requires from their coat maintenance to daily exercise needs! A tired husky is a happy (and well-behaved) husky! Also, sign up for a training class from the start!

What can husky owners do to be the best dog parent possible?

thehuskymoon: Keep your house clean organized and free of anything your husky will want to get into.  Always make sure they have proper exercise. Feed them a proper diet, many huskies prefer a raw food diet 

huskymayauk: Spend time with your dog! Along with a lot exercise they need a lot of mental stimulation. They need a lot of attention the greatest thing you can do to be the best parent is give them your time! Also never let your husky off lead if not in an enclosed area! They have a prey drive you may think they have good recall but as soon as a squirrel runs by your husky will not listen and you will have no control, they can run for miles without turning back and by the time they realise you will be no where to be found. Also huskies take a lot of grooming you need to make time to regularly brush their fur!! They have A LOT of it!!

the_husky_whisperer: Be fully invested in your baby and give it everything it needs, and you will get it back ten fold!

tuckerleo_da_huskies: I think giving a husky the best life possible is making sure they get all the exercise they need and to play with them! They aren’t always the best at entertaining themselves, so they love to have a human or doggy companion to play with!

What makes huskies unique from other dogs? 

thehuskymoon: They talk ???????????? but on a serious note, they are runners, so it’s not uncommon for a husky to run out of your home and return hours later. 

huskymayauk: Their attitude definitely! It’s so cheeky and sassy. If I say no to my husky she argues with me! It’s hilarious! Also their work ethic I know many dogs have work ethic but a husky will pull and pull and LOVES doing it! In my opinion this should be encouraged and not seem as a bad thing if you don’t want a dog that pulls don’t get a husky! It’s almost impossible to train a husky not to pull and they will be unhappy! Make it part of your lifestyle! We have a dog scooter and a bike and even roller blading with her! But this takes a lot of training so that they do it safely my husky has been learning commands for mushing since she was 12 weeks old! It’s the only time she listens to me when she’s running and pulling! That’s her motivation! Huskies are not generally big on fetch or toys although they’ll howl along to a squeaky toy! 

the_husky_whisperer: They are just the best of all breeds in my opinion.. Extremely intelligent, extremely beautiful, extremely hard working, and extremely diverse and adaptable.. Matched with a sweet nature makes them in my opinion the perfect dog!

tuckerleo_da_huskies: I think one of the most unique things about huskies is that they all have their own individual personalities! Although there are many “typical” husky traits, I have never met one that possesses them all. They also have a unique play style with other dogs, especially other huskies. 

Is there anything else you think people should know about huskies?

thehuskymoon: I think that’s it! Just know every husky is different. We get many messages about wanting a husky just like Moon, however not every dog is the same. We got so lucky that Moon is amazing with our sons (1&5) and also has a huge personality. 

huskymayauk: Fur!!! If the shedding is not for you then consider a different breed! They shed twice a year and sometimes it lasts for months, one year,  it went on for so long her shed ended and then the next one started. Accept the husky glitter as part of your diet, fashion and home furnishings and you’ll be fine! Owning a husky is a lifestyle choice i would go as far as saying you should organise your life around your husky and not vice versa!

the_husky_whisperer: Bottom line is for the most part they are a working dog bred to pull.. Very high energy. And they blow their coats like tumbleweeds ???? so be prepared for lots of fluff and lot’s of work if you get one ????

Studies show that more than 70% of dog owners would willingly “put themselves in harm’s way” to save their dog– an unsurprising statistic, considering about three quarters of the American population considers their dog a member of the family. 

Frigid and icy waters are especially dangerous in the winter months, when lakes, ponds, and pools freeze over. The water’s temperatures drop extremely low to dangerous levels. Unfortunately, too many accidents have occurred involving dogs falling into these frigid waters, whether in the wilderness, or even at home. 

Some dog owners have even gone so far as to jump into a frozen pool of water to save their dog’s life— of which some feats have been successful, and others have not. The dangers of committing such a brave act, however, far outweigh the successes. 

If your dog falls into freezing waters, although it’s tempting, jumping in to save them is NOT your best immediate course of action. By following your dog into icy waters, you are endangering yourself, your dog, and anyone else who tries to help you. Instead, prepare yourself accordingly to avoid something like this from happening, and educate yourself on what to do if it does happen. We’ve compiled a basic guide below for how to prevent this situation, and what to do if it happens. 

Prevention 

If your dog does fall into icy waters, don’t panic. Reminder: jumping in after your dog should never be the first course of action. You will endanger yourself, your dog, and others. Instead, here are a few things you can do to ensure your own safety, and promote the best outcome for your dog. 

1. Keep your dog on a leash near frozen ponds, pools, or frigid waters. If you’re anywhere near an icy pool of water, don’t be overconfident in your dog’s personal safety precautions– instead, take precautions yourself, and don’t let your dog near water unleashed. 
2. Dogs don’t instinctively know when ice is thick or safe enough to walk on, so don’t blindly trust their judgement. Keep a close eye on them and don’t let them wander near any pools of water without supervision. If you’re not 100% confident that ice is thick enough for a car to drive across, don’t let your dog (or yourself) on it. 
3. Invest in a Throwraft: This nifty tool is great to have on hand, and to take with you whenever you’re venturing out into the wilderness in the cold. Throwraft is an inflatable safety device designed to save lives. They come in many different designs, each suited to particular needs. 

What to Do If It Happens  

First, let’s take a look at what NOT to do, and why NOT to do it:

1. Don’t jump in after your dog. You endanger yourself, your dog (because even if you manage to get your dog out of the water, if you’re unable to make it out, no one will be there to care for you or your dog), and anyone else who tries to help. 
2. Don’t encourage your dog to move or swim. While your first instinct will be to get your dog out of the water, it’s important for your dog’s body to regulate its internal temperature. Moving around too much will decrease that temperature, making it harder for your dog to stay afloat, and causing joints and muscles to lock up. 

Instead, don’t panic, and DO try these following steps: 

1. Call 911 for help. The first thing you should do is call for help. Don’t rely on yourself or any random passerby to save your dog– call in the professionals. In the meantime, encourage your dog to sit tight and stay where they are. 
2. Find something you can throw to your dog (like the Throwraft) or something they could reach (like the edge of the ice). Dogs are surprisingly good at keeping themselves above water until rescuers can get to them, so just let your dog know you’re there, and give them something to grab hold of if possible. 
3. Follow directions from rescuers. While it’s tempting to dive in after your dog, or to lead the rescue since you know your dog best, sit back and let the professionals do their job. You’ll be in good hands, and you and your dog will be safer if you let rescuers lead the charge.

Safe

• Cheese: Safe in small quantities! Cheese is a tasty treat to disguise medicine/pills if your dog is smart enough to catch you sneaking medicine into their regular food. 
• Coconut: Surprisingly, coconut provides some health benefits for dogs– it reduces bad breath, aids in clearing skin conditions, and combats  viruses. Coconut milk is also okay for your dog to have. 
• Corn: Be wary– we don’t recommend corn in high quantities, or on the cob. If you are going to feed your dog corn, be sure that it’s off-the-cob. Corn is a common ingredient in dog food, but experts debate how much corn is actually acceptable to feed your dog. 
• Eggs: As long as they’re cooked all the way through, eggs are completely safe to feed your dog. 
• Fish: Amino acids, prominent in fish, are healthy for both you and your dog. 
• Honey: Honey is full of health benefits, for humans and dogs alike– it can help with allergies, builds immunity, and is packed with vitamins and antioxidants. 
• Peanut butter: Most dogs love peanut butter! It’s a great source of protein and quite a tasty treat.
• Popcorn: As long as popcorn is unbuttered and unsalted, it’s safe for your dog! Like most things in life, it’s wise to consume in moderation. 

Not Safe 

• Xylitol: A common ingredient in sugar-free gum, Xylitol can be fatal and has almost immediate effects on dogs if consumed. Xylitol is EXTREMELY toxic, so always check packaging on anything labeled “sugar-free.”
• Almonds: Dangerous for the esophagus, almonds can cause scraping, tearing, or irritation. 
• Cinnamon: Although cinnamon isn’t toxic, it’s wise to avoid it. It’s an irritant and can lower your dog’s blood sugar, but won’t cause any serious damage if taken in extremely small amounts. Overall, it’s best to avoid. 
• Chocolate: You should never, under any circumstance, feed your dog chocolate. It’s highly toxic and can be fatal. Always keep your chocolate in a very inaccessible place, preferably high off the ground and stored away in a safe space. 
• Grapes and raisins: Grapes and raisins contain an unknown substance that is highly toxic to dogs, causing liver failure.
• Onion and garlic: Onion and garlic are included in the allium group, a plant family containing Allium– which is highly toxic and dangerous for both dogs and cats. Allium damages red blood cells, which reduces oxygen flow, and results in anemia, organ failure, or fatal consequences.

CATS 

Safe 

• Cheese: Cheese is high in calcium and protein– and therefore, a purr-fect treat! Let your cat consume in moderation. 
• *Cooked meats: Cooked meats such as chicken, salmon, and turkey are fine to feed your cat AS LONG AS they are cooked thoroughly, and are completely unseasoned. Many seasonings are dangerous to cats and can cause anemia. Avoid all raw meats (unless you have extremely specific instructions from your vet), since E. coli found in raw meats can severely sicken animals. 
• Fish: Fish helps cats’ joints, brain, and eyesight. Since cats need a diet high in protein (due to their carnivorous nature), fish and other various meats are generally acceptable. 

Not Safe 

• Raw meats: See above * (contrast with cooked meats). 
• Grapes and raisins: Just as for dogs, grapes and raisins cause liver failure in cats, due to an unknown toxic substance.
• Chocolate: Just like dogs, cats can’t eat chocolate. It upsets the nervous system, the gastrointestinal system, and increases heart rate– all of this to say, chocolate is quite dangerous for your cat. 
• Plant-based (non-dairy) milks: Plant-based milks are high in fat and oils, and contain little to no lactose. 
• Nuts: Most nuts, but especially macadamia nuts and walnuts. 
• Onion and garlic: Onion and garlic are included in the allium group, a plant family containing Allium– which is highly toxic and dangerous for both dogs and cats.

Overall, be sure to research any human food in depth before feeding it to your pet. Above all else, we encourage the safety and well-being of our pets and yours, so make sure to do everything in your power to promote this in your own home!

Deshedding Your Dog 

As a preventative measure, and to maintain your pet’s healthy fur coat, deshedding is the way to go! Deshedding tackles your pet’s excess fur before it gets all over your carpets, furniture, and flying through the air. Brushing your dog’s undercoat is a great way to get a head start on the shedding as well. Create a Dog Cleaning Station

Place a mat by whichever door your dog enters the house most often (or all doors, personal preference). At your dog cleaning station, keep an extra old towel or rag (for wiping down paws and/or fur) and anything else you might need. Have a Designated Pet Throw Blanket

Like the dog cleaning station mat, a designated throw blanket or towel will collect excess fur, dirt, and debris that falls off your pet. Place the blanket or towel in an area where your pet loves to hang out the most often. The blanket simplifies your cleaning process– once sufficiently dirty, all you have to do is remove the blanket from whichever area you’ve placed it (couch, armchair, carpet, etc.) and throw it in the wash. Rinse and repeat. The blanket will protect your furniture and prevent fur from being embedded into the material. 

Deodorize Air and Furniture

The best product to use to deodorize wood floors or surfaces is vinegar. It’s natural, inexpensive, and the best part is that it doesn’t smell like vinegar once it’s dried! You can also cleanse the air by opening windows and doors for at least 10 minutes or so. Another option is to purchase an air purifier or an air purifying spray.

Happy Dog Training Education Month! The month of February is designated to a national (U.S.) holiday which encourages dog owners to properly train their furry friends. The beginning stages of training your dog can be daunting– which is why we’ve put together a basic beginner’s guide to dog training for you! 

Of course, while it’s always best to begin training your dog at the youngest age possible, it’s never too late to change behavioral habits. Once your dog is past puppy stages, training becomes far more difficult, but not impossible. If you can start young, do so, but know that if you can’t, all is not lost. 

Why dog training education?

We’ve all known that one dog at some point– the one who runs around the house with reckless abandon, who chews through furniture, who simply cannot contain himself at the dog park. For your own sake, your dog’s, and for the good of all nearby, training your dog is of the utmost importance. 

Training your dog will make you a more confident pet owner and will allow you to do more activities with your pup (while having a good time, rather than stressing and attempting to keep your dog from wreaking havoc). Training stimulates dogs’ minds and teaches them to trust you, so not only are you ensuring the well-being of others around you, but you’re also promoting the well-being of your dog.

Running with your Dog

Train to walk well before training to run: When exercising with your dog, obedience is key. The best way to ensure a successful running experience with your dog is to train him or her early on, so that running will be a breeze. Begin with basic obedience: running will not be successful if your dog can’t listen to simple commands. Once you’ve mastered basic obedience, move forward to walking. Strict walking training is beneficial in that it prepares your dog for the intensified act of running. 

Build up your dog’s endurance: Begin with intermittent running/walking before going on long runs with your dog. Just like humans, dogs need to build up their endurance before tackling loftier goals. 

Warm up and cool down: As part of training your dog well for runs, integrating a warm-up and cool-down before and after each workout helps build endurance and provides benefits for you and your dog. Warm-ups prepare the muscles, joints, and lungs for a more intense workout, while cool-downs help stretch, calm, and restore. 

Run either in the morning or late day: Never run in the heat of the day! This is unhealthy for your dog, and can be dangerous. Check the temperature of the pavement before taking your dog out for a walk or run– if you are unable to keep your hand on the pavement for more than 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog to walk on. Running either in the morning or in the late afternoon/evening is generally the best way to go, as the heat will be less intense. 

Mind their paws: Dogs’ paws are generally quite tough, but are still much more tender than most people think. One of the most important reasons for running either early or late in the day is to protect your dog’s paws from getting burnt by the hot pavement. When going on trail runs especially, make sure to watch out for your dog’s paws and don’t take them on a trail that has particularly harsh terrain. Be mindful of where your dog steps, and be sure to check paws post-workout for anything poky or prickly that could’ve gotten embedded. 

Check with your vet: Whenever you have doubts, ask your veterinarian. He or she will be able to provide you with personalized answers to your fitness-related questions. 

Why shouldn’t I run with my puppy? 

While running with younger or middle-aged dogs is acceptable, running with a puppy is dangerous and unhealthy for the young pup. Many breeds are able to begin running (in very short distances) around the age of 6 months, though even this is considered on the younger end. Most vets recommend not beginning running training with your dog until he or she is at least 9 months of age. When puppies are still young, their bones are still growing, and joints and muscles aren’t fully developed enough to support extreme exercise. 

With many larger breeds, 9 months is the absolute minimum at which run training can begin. When in doubt, the best thing to do is speak with your veterinarian, or wait a few more months until your dog is strong enough to accompany you on short runs.

For some pet owners, something as simple as leaving the house to go to the grocery store has triggered severe separation anxiety in house pets who’ve become used to the constant presence of their caretaker. As the world begins to heal from the pandemic, and move forward, we must ensure we look out for our pets, and guide them through the changes that are taking place and that are still yet to come. 

What causes separation anxiety? 

While it’s not fully understood why some dogs are more prone to separation anxiety than others, there are indicators that suggest a higher chance of the anxiety showing up: 

• Puppies: Due to their young and impressionable phase of life, puppies might develop a more severe attachment to their caretaker. Thankfully, catching separation anxiety at an earlier point in your pup’s life is easier to treat. 
• Dogs with pre-existing behavioral conditions: If your dog is already prone to any sort of behavioral conditions, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye out for any signs of separation anxiety. 
• Recently adopted pets: As a newly adopted pet has a past which will remain mostly unknown to you, it’s important to be extra sensitive and aware of what might trigger your pet. 

If you have been a work-from-home pet owner for the past year, it’s important to take the following precautions to ensure the well-being of your beloved pet if you know you’ll be heading back to the office soon. Beginning to prepare your pet a few weeks prior to returning to work is ideal. 

How to treat separation anxiety: 

• Exposure therapy: Leaving your pet at home for short periods of time, then gradually increasing the amount of time your pet is left alone for, will acquaint your pet with your periodic absence. Eventually, he or she will start becoming used to these increments of time when you’re out of the house. 
• Give your pet a treat or toy: Giving your dog a treat or toy will give them something to focus on in your absence. Toys like this puzzle toy are calming, stimulate your pet’s mind, and keep him or her occupied for long periods of time. 
• Create a safe and calming environment: If your pet has the type of separation anxiety in which he or she causes mass chaos and destruction to anything in their path, try designating an accident-free zone where your pet can feel at peace. This could be any room with the least amount of furniture and/or fragile house decor, or any room you transform into such. The goal is to keep your pet safe and comfortable, while also protecting your home. 
• Leave your recently worn clothes: The pheromones from an article of clothing produce a calming effect, making your dog feel like you are close. 
• Pet camera: If you are unsure whether your pet has separation anxiety, or if you have suspicions that they do but you’ve been unable to identify it, try purchasing a pet camera in order to keep an eye on them throughout the day. Many pets will not exhibit the true nature of their distress until their owner has already left the house.

Plants have the ethereal capability of brightening up any living space they’re in. They provide fresh air, circulation, and general feelings of joy and well-being. However, when choosing which plants to include in your pet-friendly living space, one must heed caution to avoid plants that are toxic and therefore dangerous to pets! 

Keep in mind: although some plants considered non-toxic may still cause digestive complications, unlike toxic plants, symptoms do not run the risk of being fatal. 

NON-TOXIC PLANTS

Spider plant: This non-toxic plant is easy to care for, and thrives in a variety of environments (ranging from low to moderate sunlight, and moderate watering).

Areca palm: Although some palms are toxic to dogs and cats, the areca is not. This is especially helpful considering the long and alluring nature of the leaves. 

Boston fern: The Boston fern is partial to humidity and bright, indirect sunlight, and is non-toxic to dogs and cats. Like palms, their fronds may be attractive to pets, but will do no harm. 

Calathea: This plant’s popularity has increased quite drastically in recent years, deservedly so. Its beauty flourishes in shady patches (as to not damage/fade coloring), where your pet can curl up worry-free nearby. 

Polka Dot plant: Although this plant is not toxic, heed caution in your placement of this plant in your house. Ingesting the leaves is likely to cause digestive problems in cats and dogs, though unlike toxic plants, the symptoms are not fatal. 

Peperomia: This plant is fairly low-maintenance, requiring less frequent waterings, and is a great decorative addition to the home. To keep out of the way, it can be grown in a hanging basket. 

Cape marigold: Marigolds are least likely, of non-toxic plants, to cause upset digestive tracts, and make a great addition to your home. 

Cast iron plant: Hardy and extremely durable, cast iron plants will survive in most climates and through temperature changes. Considering its steadfastness, it’s sure to last through any chaotic pet’s attempts at defiling it. 

Bamboo palm: Another non-toxic palm, the bamboo palm is a gorgeous, tall plant that can grow up to eight feet in height. It grows best in shady spaces. 

Burro’s tail: This succulent is non-toxic to both dogs and cats. Its trailing stems induce a pleasing and modern aesthetic. As a hanging plant, Burro’s tail makes a great addition to any home. 

TOXIC PLANTS

Sago palm: A toxin in the sago palm, known as cycasin, affects the liver, causing a myriad of side effects (including liver failure). 

Snake plant: If ingested, may cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and drooling. 

Asparagus fern: Since the asparagus fern is not considered a “true” fern– unlike Boston, maidenhair, and others– it is toxic for dogs and cats. As mentioned above, ferns such as Boston and maidenhair are non-toxic. 

Devil’s ivy: If you choose to have any toxic trailing plants in your home, it’s best to keep them out of reach and high up so that there is no chance of your pet interacting with it. 

Rubber tree: Any and all parts of the rubber tree are toxic if ingested by pets– the compound known as psoralen attacks and causes damage to DNA cells. 

Hydrangea: When ingested, causes diarrhea, lethargy, and vomiting. 

Unfortunately, there are far too many houseplants to list that are considered either toxic or non-toxic to pets, but you can find an extensive listing on the ASPCA website for more information.

Where was this treat made? 

You may have heard about some treat recalls a few years back and wonder what has changed since then? Not much, as it turns out. In the past 15 years or so, China has become the leading source of US dog treat products. While lower prices and lesser regulations drive competition, these qualities can be quite unassumingly dangerous. A quick search of the internet informs that since 2015, the FDA has received about 5,200 recorded cases of pet illness or death associated with Chinese imported jerky treats.

While there has not been a recall of China-sourced jerky treats since 2016, it is important to remember that their manufacturing regulations continue to be far less stringent than those here in the United States. Unfortunately, in the past this allowed Chinese companies to use potentially dangerous/toxic or unethically sourced ingredients. While we hope that individual manufacturers in China have taken it upon themselves to step up their safety measures since then, the persisting lack of government oversight is enough to make the most cautious pet owner think twice about where their treats are sourced. US companies are aware of the stigma, thus outsourced treats from China that are repackaged here under familiar US brands, are sometimes hard to identify. Origin information is generally relegated to very small print on or near product barcodes. In the case of non-packaged items in bins, the best approach is to ask your trusted pet store purveyor.

Here in the US, manufacturers have not been immune to issues with their pet consumables either. A recent recall of pet food containing high levels of Aflatoxin from an Oklahoma manufacturer came too late for more than 110 dogs in this country. A few years prior to that, pig ears imported from the Brazil and Argentina caused multiple outbreaks of salmonella among pets and their people. 

It is what it is. Like most fun things in life, no pet treat is 100% risk-free, but there are a few measures you can take to make sure your pet stays fit as a fiddle while still enjoying his vittles.

What can I do? 

1. Talk to your local vet. He or she is likely to have recommendations as to which pet treats are the healthiest and most ethically sourced. Of course they might also suggest that a healthy diet generally includes a reduction in treat intake!

1. You can make your own treats from scratch, which ensures you know every single ingredient that goes into the mix. 

1. Check labels before purchasing. Consider carefully before buying treats manufactured outside of the US. 

1. Read online recommendations about which treat brands are the best, whether because they are organic, budget-friendly, or the best for your dog’s special needs.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Jeff Gerlesits of Homeward Bound Animal Hospital in Arvada, Colorado, about his thoughts on the matter. Thanks to the power of the internet and modern communication methods, I was able to sit down with Dr. Gerlesits for a virtual conversation. 

What dog treat product labels should consumers be wary of? Which ingredients or sources should consumers avoid?

“Ingredients we want to watch out for are possible toxins that actually quite often get added to the treats.  For example: 

• Xylitol is a sweetener, but acts as an insulin agonist in dogs and is hard on their liver 
• Onions and garlic can be detrimental to a dog’s red blood cells 
• Grapes and raisins (which are sometimes, as dried fruits, wrapped around treats) can be toxic 

As a general rule, we want treats to compose up to or less  than 10% of the diet. Since our dog treats do not have to have the same balance of macro and micro nutrients, we do not want them to make up too large of a portion of the diet. And regardless how little or many treats we add, we do want to factor that into the overall calories they get for the day so as to not overfeed.”

What should consumers be looking for on dog treat packaging to ensure they purchase the highest quality product for their dog?

“We have had more pet food treat recalls with treats coming from out of the country, which should make us slightly cautious. China specifically tends to be a country that can sometimes have cheaper quality dog treats. In addition, with less stringent requirements on the processing side, we have had more pet food recalls from their treats. One example would be chicken jerky from China in the past few years. We have had multiple episodes of batches containing salmonella.”  

What are the healthiest and most natural dog treats on the market? 

“Consider getting treats that have an additional benefit to dogs. I am partial to getting treats that are beneficial to their teeth (greenies, dental sticks, etc), their joints (treats that have glucosamine, chondroitin, boswellia, New Zealand green lipped mussel, and other natural anti-inflammatory benefits), or for calming (thiamine, L-theanine, etc.).

One of my favorite treats would be Zuke’s.  They make a great joint supplement and small bite treat and are made locally here in Durango, Colorado.”

It’s far too easy to get the wrong idea that in order to keep clothes in pristine condition, they must be of the highest end fabrics from the most expensive brands. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the case. The most important thing about sweaters is not necessarily what material it is– but how you take care of the material. 

What’s sustainable? 

Granted, most higher-end, natural-fiber sweaters are the most sustainable route, but so are thrifted and secondhand materials. Many of these secondhand materials are likely to be polyester, nylon, or another synthetic weave. 

By nature, materials like polyester aren’t sustainable, and shouldn’t be purchased new if  avoidable. However, considering the rise of thrift and consignment stores, many polyester-like items are found dangling off the never-ending clothing racks. Even if you do choose to newly purchase a polymer weave garment, there are ways to promote the longevity of the piece. 

All-natural fibers will always be the winners in our book, and the most sustainable option long-term, but if you take the time and energy to give your synthetic fibers the proper care, they just might last you nearly as long. 

What is proper care?

First and foremost, you should always treat your garments with care! It doesn’t matter what material the piece is composed of; you should treat each clothing item as if it were of the highest-end material and design. Sweaters are the most difficult pieces to take care of, generally, because of the delicacy of the materials and the side effects of improper care. Sweaters are prone to shrinkage, pilling, and other natural sweater disasters if not cared for properly (and even sometimes when cared for properly!). 

Proper care consists of the most beneficial washing and drying cycle, coupled with responsible storage methods. 

Washing and Drying

The most effective way to promote healthy sweater care, even amongst synthetic fibers, is to use the right washing and drying methods. 

First, use the right washing cycle! We recommend ALWAYS machine-washing on cold, since warm temperatures induce risk of material shrinkage or color bleeding. A cold cycle also reduces the risk of color fading and keeps your garment in pristine condition. 

Second, you should never, and I mean NEVER, machine-dry your sweaters. This will only damage the fibers, leading to either shrinkage, shedding, or extreme pilling. The more you machine-dry a garment, the more worn-down it becomes over time. As a rule of thumb, the only garments you should consistently machine-dry are socks, undergarments, t-shirts or any underclothing that isn’t worn as an outer layer. Hang-drying is the best option for any clothing item not aforementioned, such as pants, sweaters, blouses, and the like. 

If you’re unsure exactly which cycle to choose for your sweater washing, sometimes the delicate cycle is the best way to go, since the cycle is preset on cold wash and will give your garments a gentler wash than a regular cycle. 

Storage

Whether you’re freshening up your sweaters from storage, storing them away, or simply holding them in your closet, proper sweater storage is just as important for sweater care as your washing and drying methods. When simply storing your sweaters for immediate use, the best method is to fold your sweaters into drawers or some place where they can lay flat. Have you ever experienced the healing presence of animals? Perhaps you’ve noticed a drastic mood lift after playing with a puppy, or snuggling with a kitten. You’re not wrong to infer that being with cuddly animals improves your mood– in fact, multiple research studies have actually proven this point to be true! What you’ve experienced is known as the “Pet Effect,” coined by researchers at the Human Animal Bond Research Institute.

The “Pet Effect,” according to Mental Health America (MHA), is a phenomenon that bonds humans and animals and mutually provides many health benefits. Research demonstrates a myriad of these health benefits from developing bonds with animals, including alleviation of anxiety and depression, lowering of stress hormones, and reduction of risk for diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The Pet Effect, also known as the Human-Animal Bond,  also demonstrates increased heart health, and overall greater happiness. 

The benefits of the Pet Effect are mutually beneficial, as the animals that humans develop bonds with also experience better overall health. According to the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), humans who bond with their pets are better equipped to take care of their pets. Bonded pet owners are also more likely to treat their pets with proper medical assistance (i.e. taking pets to the veterinarian), and are generally more in tune with their pets’ needs. 

As the bond with animals increases physical human health, it also significantly improves mental health. As aforementioned, research (from institutions such as HABRI) has proven such effects as the reduction of anxiety and depression, along with the lowering of stress hormones. Listed below are a few of the most common mental health benefits that arise from developing positive emotional bonds with pets. 

Reduces Anxiety and Depression

Studies indicate that owning a pet/having a significant bond with an animal alleviates anxiety, depression, stress, and feelings of loneliness. While modeling unconditional love, pets also provide a sense of stability and consistency that other humans can’t always exude, thus creating a sense of a healthy, stable bond without the fear of losing it. The same studies that show a reduction in anxiety and depression also indicate an increase in levels of oxytocin in the brain. Oxytocin is a chemical in the brain that’s released when experiencing emotional bonds– which is why it’s often referred to as the “love chemical.” Similar to dopamine and serotonin, it has been shown to improve moods and to increase general mental well-being. 

Lowers Stress Levels 

On the chemical level, bonding and interacting with animals (specifically pets) has been proven to decrease cortisol (stress hormone) levels. Studies have also shown that frequent time spent with pets lowers blood pressure, which is another contributing factor to reducing stress. Elevated levels of serotonin and dopamine, which are associated with feelings of joy and happiness, bring calm and relaxation, rather than stress and tension. 

Improves Social Stability 

Owning a pet gives us a purpose– to take care of another besides ourselves– and makes us feel needed. It also decreases feelings of loneliness and social isolation. Especially for children, owning a pet teaches one to care for another, and how to interact properly. Although interactions with pets are far different from those with humans, an underlying empathy still teaches pet owners how to develop emotional bonds. For those who feel socially isolated (especially during the course of the pandemic), having a loyal companion is enough to keep oneself going. Having a pet, at the very least, provides owners with a companion, one they know they can trust and love unconditionally.

While you work from home, you probably aren’t always in your office alone! As the work-from-home flow continues onward, it’s helpful to schedule in time with your BFFs, your office acquaintances– otherwise known as your pet! Over the past ten months, we work-from-homers have learned to manage the work/home life balance. Sometimes, work and home still become interchangeable, and we are left wondering how to draw clear distinctions between them. 

Oftentimes, our pets become confused by our ever-changing schedules, especially as we continue to stay at home while working but while also being unable to give them the full attention they crave. To keep your pet well-adjusted to the work-at-home life, try following these tips below! 

Schedule Walks

Scheduling walks is a great tactic to get both you and your pet up and moving! While you’re sitting in an office all day, and your dog is lounging about the house, walks provide a great mental break and are a perfect way to get in physical exercise and fresh air. Morning walks are best, before getting your work day started (and wearing out your pup a bit before you start hopping onto meetings), but afternoon and evening walks are always great to break up your work day and get outside. 

Schedule Break Times

Marking break times into your daily schedule is necessary for your own sanity, as well as your pet’s. Taking the time to play with your pet or give them attention at various points in the day is essential, especially if you work in a separate space away from your pet (which we highly recommend; see below). Not to mention, taking breaks from work is imperative to workplace success. Spending time with your pet before joining an online meeting has also been proven to prevent barking and anxiety when you’re on a call. 

Use a Separate Work Space

Try setting up a separate workspace for your office hours– you and your pet will both benefit from this. You’ll be able to train your pet to not be dependent on you, for whenever the time comes for you to work away from home again, and the separation of space will keep you focused throughout the day. Keeping a separate space will also allow you to stick to your walk, play, and food schedule. 

Keep Your Pet Occupied 

Keep your pet busy while you’re hard at work, or absorbed in meetings. Mental stimulation is important for growth and health in all pets, dogs and cats alike. One of the most highly recommended mental stimulation toys for dogs is KONG, which stimulates your dog’s mind by making him/her work towards a goal. These toys, and many similar, require effort and concentration, which will keep your dog busy for hours. Cats, on the other hand, are generally self-entertaining. If you have an especially fidgety cat, however, there’s a wide variety of cat toys that will keep your kitten entertained. Scratching posts and cat towers are other great alternatives!

Get More Exercise 

Exercise is important not only for your dog, but for you as well! It boosts endorphins, energy, and improves your mood and mental health. For your dog, it keeps him or her in shape, combats anxiety, and promotes healthy aging in bones and joints. Exercising your dog regularly also promotes healthy socialization, overall wellness, and a happier pup! You and your dog will create a stronger bond the more you exercise together. 

Healthier Diet 

You and your pet can tag-team on this resolution– start by eating healthier foods, and less treats! For your pets, making sure they have healthy and organic food is imperative. Be sure to buy food with the “organic” label rather than “natural,” since natural labels can still include ingredients that aren’t the best for your pet. 

Stop Feeding Your Dog Table Food 

Although it’s tempting to feed your dog scraps from dinner, it’s best not to. While there are some human foods that are completely harmless for dogs, teaching your dog not to beg at the table is a necessary part of obedience training. If you do choose to feed your dog select human foods, make sure they are nutritional and beneficial for your dog– and don’t give it to your pup at the dinner table. Rather, give these snacks during a different time of day, or place the snack in your dog’s food bowl. 

Travel to New Places 

What’s better than a grand new adventure? Not much! If you live in a place where there are hiking trails and dog parks galore, take your dog exploring with you! Discovering new places to go is a great way to get out of the house and to get up and moving. It’ll stimulate your mind and your dog’s, and introduce you to places you never knew even existed! You’ll get to know your own little part of the world better, and your dog will be so much happier from it. 

Play with your Pet More 

Just as getting more exercise creates stronger bonds between owner and pet, so does playing with your pet! It’s a form of exercise, and will keep your pet happy and feeling well-loved. Pets need extra special attention in the midst of this past year, and so do you. 

Walk Your Dog Daily 

Walking is not only great physical exercise, but also exceptional mental exercise! Walks stimulate a dog’s mind, allowing them to explore and learn about the world. While taking your dog on a routine path is great, it’s also fun to switch it up and find new paths to explore. This will stimulate your dog’s mind even more, and it’ll stimulate yours as well! 

Try Something New! 

Teach your pet a new trick, find a new go-to outdoor spot, or even try making homemade pet treats! There are so many new and creative activities to do with your pet. The possibilities are endless! Whatever you do, be sure to have fun. This new activity could be a great bonding experience for you and your pet, and just might be your (or your pet’s) new favorite thing!

It’s that time of year: the snow is falling, the temperatures are plunging, and you’re warming your jack-frost-bitten nose by fireside. Your dog is snuggled up beside you: cozy, content, and cuddly. Why? Because you’ve taken the proper precautions to keep your pup safe and happy this winter! 

The winter months are especially harsh on animals, so the best thing you can do to ensure your pet’s safety this season is take extra special care, making sure to follow these tips below: 

1. Limit Time Outdoors 

When your dog is outside, be sure to keep an eye on him/her. Temperatures can plummet quickly, but even as they stay steady, your dog may get cold fast. Make sure to only keep your dog outside for 15 minutes or less when temperatures drop. Extreme temperatures most commonly affect ears and tail tips, where lack of circulation causes extremities to lose blood and oxygen flow. When possible, keep your pup indoors to keep them safe and cozy. 

2. Watch Out for Hypothermia and Frostbite

While limiting your time outdoors, check your dog’s ears and tail tip each time they come indoors. During extreme cold, it’s important to be wary of frostbite and hypothermia, two cold-induced conditions to be careful of. Frostbite occurs when the dog’s extremities become too cold, and lose the proper circulation required to keep those parts of the body warm. Keep a close eye on this, because frostbite is much more difficult to spot than hypothermia– look out for cold, hard patches of skin, and any area where the skin turns grey. Hypothermia, on the other hand, is easier to spot. It occurs when a dog has been left in the cold for too long, and when proper circulation is disrupted. You can prevent hypothermia by limiting your dog’s time outside, and by keeping a close eye on them when they’re not in the house. 

3. Don’t Leave your Dog Outside Alone

Just as you should be cautious of how long your dog spends outside, you should never leave your dog outside alone. Continuously check in to make sure they’re doing okay– especially in temperatures close to or below freezing. Never keep your dog outside in these conditions longer than 15 minutes at a time to ensure proper circulation and warmth. Making sure you never leave your dog alone outside prevents cold-induced conditions such as hypothermia and frostbite, while also showing your dog you’re not abandoning him/her to the harsh winter weather.

4. Keep your Dog Moisturized/Hydrated

Cold weather quickly dries out and irritates skin, as you may notice in your own skincare routine. Where you can easily apply lotion and be done with it, dogs can’t quite do the same. To keep your dog moisturized and hydrated, try these safe moisturizing products. For hydration, make sure that your dog has constant access to a water source, since dehydration can onset quickly during dry winter months. 5. Sweaters for Long Walks

For small dogs, walks outside in the cold air could be dangerous! To help keep your dog warm, and avoid conditions such as hypothermia and frostbite, investing in a sweater and/or dog booties is a great idea. When looking at sweaters, be sure to find comfortable, durable, and high-quality sweaters to ensure maximum warmth and coziness. When choosing a sweater, go for comfort and warmth instead of aiming for style. 

6. Stay Inside! 

As often as you can, keep your dog indoors! Staying inside more often than not ensures your dog’s warmth and comfort when the cold becomes too dangerous. NEVER leave your dog outside overnight in cold temperatures– this is extremely dangerous, and will cause hypothermia, which can be life-threatening. 

7. Protect From Heaters/Heat Sources

When keeping your dog indoors, keep them away from heat sources. If they’re too close, they can begin to overheat, or even risk burns. The most common heat sources to keep your pet away from are fireplaces, ovens, and heaters. If your dog seems cold, let them cozy up in a nice dog bed or a bunch of blankets. 

8. Take Care of your Pup’s Paws

Some dogs, such as golden doodles, get severe snow clumps in their paws. If this happens to your dog, wipe down their paws when they come inside from the snow, and remove what you can. Because of the cold, dogs’ paws also tend to crack on the pads because of ice and winter salt. If you’re concerned about salt on the roads and sidewalks, check out options for dog booties that will keep your dog’s paws both warm and protected. 

9. Never Leave your Dog in the Car

Just as you should never leave your dog in the car during hot summers, you should never leave your dog in the car during freezing winters. When cars sit for a certain period of time in winter, the interior absorbs the cold from outside, creating a very cold environment within the car. When dogs are left in these environments for any length of time, it can be extremely dangerous. 

10. Keep Dogs Outside During Warm/Sunny Spells

When the sun peeks out from behind gloomy skies, this is the perfect time to take your dog outside! Let your pup get as much sunshine as possible, since for the majority of winter weather, they’ll be indoors with limited natural light. The sun is good for humans and animals alike, so make sure to get yourself outside during warm, sunny days as well! The next best thing to finding your pup’s favorite treats at the store is making your own! Making your own treats ensures that you know exactly what ingredients are going into what you feed your dog. It also guarantees no preservatives, additives, or dangerous/harmful ingredients that sneak past you on the packaging. Before making your own treats, however, make sure you know exactly what you dog can and can’t eat– i.e. allergies or anything your pup has had a reaction to in the past. These three recipes below are healthy, tasty, and fun, and they’re sure to put a smile on your dog’s face! 

To make sure that we’re providing you with the best treat recipes, I’ve made each of the three below, and added pictures of my own. 

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Treats

These Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Treats are the perfect fall snack for your dog! You can cook them longer (30-40 mins) for a crunchier bite, or less (20-25 mins) for a soft chew. Once the treats come out of the oven, let them cool for 20 minutes before feeding to your dog. Be sure to make it very clear to your dog that it’s a treat– my dog took it in his mouth and ran around the house for 15 minutes before realizing he could actually eat it. Once he discovered it was edible, of course, he loved it. 

Ingredients: 

• 1 can pumpkin puree 

• 2 eggs

• ⅓ cup peanut butter (MUST BE ALL NATURAL– any peanut butter with Xylitol is highly toxic and dangerous, so be sure to read the ingredient list before adding peanut butter. Read more here.) 

• 2 cups whole wheat (or all-purpose) flour

*The recipe calls for pumpkin spice or cinnamon, but I left mine out. Before using any spice, make sure you know what allergies your dog has, and/or if your dog has had a reaction to any spices in the past.

Apple Crunch Pupcakes 

Autumn isn’t only the season of pumpkins, it’s prime time for any and all apple baked goods. These Apple Crunch Pupcakes are sure to spice up your dog’s day. 

Ingredients:

• 2 ¾ cups water

• ¼ cup applesauce (unsweetened) 

• 2 Tbsp honey

• 1 egg

• 4 cups whole wheat (or all-purpose) flour 

• 1 cup dried apple chips 

• 1 Tbsp baking powder 

*This recipe calls for vanilla extract, but I recommend NOT using it, as too much vanilla extract is actually toxic and harmful for dogs. Read more here.

Pupkin Spice Latte

Here’s another pumpkin treat for your furry friend, because it’s pumpkin season! Also, pumpkin is full of nutrients and has many health benefits for dogs. This treat has a strong resemblance to the Puppuccino– but is definitely tastier and healthier. 

Ingredients:

• 1 cup coconut or goat milk (I used coconut) 

• 1 cup pumpkin puree 

• Dash of ground ginger 

• Dash of cinnamon 

• Organic whipped cream (optional; must be organic or hand-whipped) 

You can get the full recipe here— this blog’s presentation is much more exciting and true to its origins. I hand-whipped the whipped cream for this recipe, and didn’t add any sugars. If you choose this method, all you need is heavy whipping cream and a whisk (or hand mixer). Whisk on high speed for a few minutes until ridges in the cream become visible. 

If you have leftover whipped cream, you can morph it into a Puppuccino, or add sugar and make a little treat for yourself! 

Storing treats: 

• Seal in an airtight container; treats last for about 3 days 
• Store in freezer: lasts up to 6 months. Let treats thaw for 20 minutes before giving to your dog. 

*BEFORE YOU BAKE: watch out for dog allergies, research what allergies your specific breed might have, and don’t include any ingredient that your dog has reacted to badly in the past!

The Straw Method

What you’ll need:

• 2 large plastic tubs (one needs to be small enough to fit inside the other, leaving room around the edges) 
• Hairdryer 
• Sharpie 
• Xacto knife 
• Straw 

How to build:

• To start, remove the lids from the tubs. On the large tub, use the blow dryer to soften the rubber or plastic of the tub by blowing it on the area where you’ll be cutting a hole for the cat to enter the shelter. For visuals, check out this video. 

• With the Xacto knife, cut a 6 inch square hole, about 6 inches from the bottom of the large tub (to keep out snow, water, or anything else that could damage the interior). Once you’ve cut the hole, place the small tub inside of the large and trace the hole onto the small tub. Repeat the hair dryer process, then cut the hole in the small tub. 

• Before placing the small tub inside the large, lay a light layer of straw at the bottom of the large tub. Then, place the small tub inside the large, making sure the holes are aligned. Fill in the empty space between the two tubs with straw to insulate the shelter. 

• Put the lid on the small tub, then cover with more straw. Then put the lid on the large tub, enclosing the shelter. 

The Insulation Method

What you’ll need:

• 2 large plastic tubs (one needs to be small enough to fit inside the other, leaving room around the edges)
• Hairdryer 
• Sharpie 
• Xacto knife 
• Insulation (from any hardware store like Lowe’s or Home Depot) 

How to build:

• To start, remove the lids from the tubs. On the large tub, use the blow dryer to soften the rubber or plastic of the tub by blowing it on the area where you’ll be cutting a hole for the cat to enter the shelter. 

• With the Xacto knife, cut a 6 inch square hole, about 6 inches from the bottom of the large tub (to keep out snow, water, or anything else that could damage the interior). Before you place the small tub inside the large, you’ll need to trace the bottom of the tub on the insulation, like this. If you can’t find thick insulation, try the heat reflective material used in this method. 

• Cut the traced insulation area with the Xacto knife and place at the bottom of the large tub. Repeat this process by tracing each side of the bin so that you have insulation on each side of the shelter. Trim insulation accordingly if the measurements are off. Place the small tub inside, making sure it fits snugly between the insulation and the large tub. Put the lid on the small tub, then place remaining insulation on top before covering completely with the large tub lid. 

• You can use insulation like this water-resistant option or this thermal insulation for best results. 

*Cats feel most comfortable in warm, tucked away spaces, and cushioning your shelter with blankets will make them feel much more at home. To make the plastic interiors cozier and more inviting to our feline friends, add polar fleece, towels, or soft blankets for them to snuggle up in!

What is static?

You might remember running around as a child with a balloon in hand, rubbing it on your head to see if it would stick to your hair, or trying to make it stay attached to the walls in your house. This fun little phenomenon is known as static electricity– both a terrifying and awesome force of natural physics. Terrifying, for example, if you’re out in an open field during a thunderstorm. Awesome, however, if you’re a kid running around your house with a balloon. 

Static electricity is caused by friction between two “insulators” (non-metals), when electrons are transferred from the surface on one object to the other. In case you were busy doodling or giggling with your friend during middle school science class instead of listening to your teacher (we’re all guilty of this at one point or another), here’s a little refresher for you.

How to Make your Own Static Guard

If static’s got you down, you’ve come to the right place. Static frequently plagues clothing and furniture on a daily basis, and sometimes, the only cure is static spray. Thankfully, there are many options for static spray, and there are even a few tools to help you along the way.

In some cases, it’s easier to DIY than to buy– and this is one of those cases. As long as you have a spray bottle on hand, you’re ready to go. There are a few different ways you could go about making your static spray, two of which are listed below. 

Method 1: 

2 Tbsp liquid fabric softener 

1 cup water 

Mix fabric softener and water in spray bottle and shake well before using. 

Method 2: 

1 cup witch hazel extract 

5 drops lavender essential oil 

Add witch hazel and essential to spray bottle and shake well before each use.

Both methods work on clothing and furniture. To use, shake the bottle before each use. Hold the bottle anywhere between 6-12 inches away from your garment or material, then spritz the area. 

If you’re dealing with pesky pet hair clinging to your couch, chairs, or other furniture, spray the area before using the Fluffy Pets Brush (portable version available here) to collect all of the unwanted fur and remove it from the material.

Now that we’re well into November, your favorite sweaters are sure to be in your weekly outfit rotation. After properly storing your knitwear through the summer, and unboxing it for the fall, it’s time to take sweater care to the next level. Sweater maintenance is just as important as prepping sweaters for and removing sweaters from storage, so we’ve created a comprehensive guide to consistently caring for your favorite knitwear. 

Hand Wash Delicate Materials

To prevent frayed threads and to keep your sweaters in pristine condition, hand washing is the best way to go. Place your sweater in a bucket of cool water. Then, add  laundry detergent and let the fabric soak for about 30 minutes. Once properly soaked, remove from the bucket and rinse under cold water. 

Freeze Out Carpet Bugs

The best (and easiest) way to get rid of any obnoxious bugs is to stick your sweater in the freezer! The low temperature creates a hostile environment for any little creature, and will make it impossible for mites to continue chewing at your fabrics. Keep your sweater in the freezer for anywhere between a few hours to a full day. If you’re having a consistent bug issue, read more here for more tips and tricks. 

Get to Know your De-Fuzzing Brush

Specially designed sweater brushes have proven to be much more efficient than lint rollers. While lint rollers seem to provide a quick solution, they endanger the safety of your delicate fabrics, and don’t get at the root of the problem. Invest instead in a brush like this, which will work wonders on all your natural fiber sweaters. 

Safe Machine Washing 

If you don’t have the time or luxury to wash each of your sweaters by hand, be sure to machine wash them properly. Turn your sweaters inside out to help prevent pilling, and run the wash on a shorter cycle. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully depending on the sweater material, and always run sweater cycles on cold. To avoid shrinkage and excess pills, allow your garment to air dry– do NOT use a drying machine.

What is National Cat Day? A day to spoil and appreciate your cat, of course. Every year, on October 29, cat lovers across America take part in this holiday. Keep an eye out for August 8 of next year for International Cat Day, where you can celebrate with your friends all across the globe! But for now, take the time to celebrate your cat today. 

What is it?

National Cat Day was created in 2005 by Colleen Paige to raise awareness for rescue cats in need of a home. She encouraged animal lovers to visit shelters and either volunteer their time or adopt a new furry friend. Paige’s mission was “To help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their lives for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us.” In other words, her goal was to help raise public awareness of the number of cats that need a home, and to show love and affection to the cats we already have. 

Why should you celebrate?

Celebrating National Cat Day encourages the safety and well-being of cats across the country. Many cats are mistreated, homeless, or abandoned. You can do your part to help these cats by engaging in the activities listed below! 

6 Fun National Cat Day Activities

1. Adopt a Cat from a Shelter

The best thing you can do today is adopt from your local shelter! We recommend researching nearby shelters before choosing which one to visit to be sure you adopt from one that is ethical and treats their animals well. The best gift for a cat today is adoption into a safe and loving home. 

2. Volunteer at a Shelter

Why Sweaters?

Autumn’s chill has begun to settle into the morning breeze, the leaves that crunch under your boots, and the fog of your daily coffee. Fall is the most enchanting season; the leaves teach us that it’s okay to fall, that we’ll be born anew if only we are patient (just like our sweaters have been, awaiting our return and their deliverance from tattered cardboard boxes and dingy basements).

One of the most common questions at the beginning of the fall season is this: “How do I revive my sweater after it’s been in storage?” Too many people assume that putting sweaters into storage and taking them out again is far simpler than it actually is. 

If you’ve somehow stumbled across this post at the end of winter, check out the Lilly Brush Team’s last post on sweater care, for when you’re packing your sweaters up for storage. 

For those of you who have found this post in early to mid-autumn, read on to find our best advice for removing your sweaters from storage.

Step 1

After being stored away for so long, your sweater needs some extra attention and TLC. Since it’s been stored away for months, once it comes out of hiding, the first thing it needs is a good wash. 

Clean your sweater in the washer on the delicate setting or wash by hand in cold or room temperature water. Water that’s warm or hot will shrink the sweater, so avoid anything warmer than room temperature in order to keep your sweater in pristine condition. 

Step 2

Allow your sweater to air dry before moving forward in the sweater revival process. Lay on a towel or drying rack to avoid hanger marks in the sleeves. 

Your sweater may have collected a few unsuspected scents after emerging from the box it’s been stored in, so a thorough wash and dry is essential to the wellbeing and longevity of your most treasured sweaters. Allowing your sweater to dry in a clean, fresh area will infuse the sweater with the cleanliness and freshness of the area. 

Step 3

Your sweater will most likely have pills and lint after coming out of storage, especially if it wasn’t stored in the proper conditions. Use our handy Save Our Sweaters brush to rid of all the excess pillage and dust! This brush works on 100% natural fibers, including cashmere, wool, and cotton. Even I have been guilty of improperly storing my sweaters during the summer months, and this brush has done nothing less than save my sweaters.

The story is dense with metaphors, valuable life lessons, and is an allegory. If you’re into that sort of thing. While the story’s primary focus isn’t the dog, Tock, he plays a very important role in the story. He helps the main character’s understanding of time, of growing up, and of the value of imagination.

A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron 

Remember that box of tissues from earlier? Yeah, you might want to hang onto those for this one. A Dog’s Purpose follows the story of a dog over the course of four lifespans. He begins as Toby, then Bailey, then Elleya, and lastly, Buddy. In each life, Toby must discover what his purpose is in the world. You’ll be crying an equal amount of sad and happy tears as you discover along with him. With all the emotions this book brings, joy and happiness are at the top of the list. The joy outshines the tear-jerking moments, and the story will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart.

The Call of the Wild by Jack London 

This book is another classic that stands the test of time, especially for the avid adventurer. Following the epic tale of the dog Buck, this book will take you on a journey through love, friendship, loss, and rediscovery. Buck must find his way through the freezing Alaskan tundra– but not without the help of a few friends along the way.
